Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) are currently looking for a Primary Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing battery energy storage system (BESS) team. You will provide subject matter expertise and collaborate with an experienced and knowledgeable team of engineers and designers, as well as supporting and mentoring junior members of the team.

As part of the wider design team, the role of the Primary Electrical Design Engineer is to lead the production of electrical layouts for substations (including AIS / GIS up to 400kV), cable route layout drawings & sections, LV layouts, switch room and control room equipment layouts and site earthing layouts etc. This dynamic role will be hybrid and involve a combination of site, office and remote working.

As part of Mott MacDonald Group, the role will offer the opportunity to work with other industry-leading specialists to deliver flagship industry projects. Within MMB, the role also offers the unique opportunity to work as part of a fully integrated design-and-build project, liaising closely with construction and commissioning teams throughout to ensure the successful end-to-end delivery of the project.

As Primary / Senior HV Electrical Design Engineer you will:

  • Determine the base electrical site layout for a project covering adoptable and private assets, accounting for the need to bring external services / connections to each item of plant or equipment, and in compliance with project DNO / IDNO / client requirements.
  • Help to co-ordinate systems studies, assisting with compiling and communicating information for these to be completed and ensuring that outputs are incorporated into the detailed design and associated equipment specifications.
  • Contribute to the production of specifications for major items of plant and equipment such as disconnectors, CTs, VTs, SAs, PIs and for more complex items such as circuit breakers and transformers, and approval of manufacturer information.
  • Design of equipment support structures for AIS electrical equipment from 66kV to 400kV, including conveying requirements to the manufacturer, and approval of manufacturer information.
  • Lead the electrical design integration of inverters, BESS enclosures, PCS units, transformers and auxiliary systems to the grid connection point.
  • Produce site wide ducting / cabling layout drawings, coordinating requirements with other engineering disciplines. The candidate should have a working knowledge of cable types and installation techniques, ideally from 11kV up to 400kV.
  • Develop earthing layouts for sites at all voltage levels, from first principles, that can be verified by the earthing designer.
  • Liaise with and support the installation and commissioning teams to ensure that the system is installed and tested in accordance with the design.
  • Contribute to development of standardised systems, processes, designs and specifications.

What you can offer:

  • A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
  • Previous experience of primary electrical design with a consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry.
  • Experienced in the design of HV AC power systems.
  • Have demonstrable experience in producing electrical layout drawings for substations, switchrooms, control rooms and balance of plant projects that may be privately owned or have elements adopted by the host DNO; 11kV distribution networks, 22kV distribution networks, 33kV switchrooms and control rooms, 66kV-400kV AIS substations.
  • Understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications, including a demonstrable working understanding of TO / DNO specifications.
  • Understanding of cable installation types, their requirements and installation parameters.
  • Ability to take the initiative, demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities and problems.
