Business Unit: The Energy unit delivers integrated engineering and project management services across the energy transition, supporting a range of sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewables and transmission & distribution networks.
Overview of the Role: Electrical Technical Principal responsible for leading primary electrical design of high‑voltage transmission infrastructure on both onshore and offshore projects. Candidate should have extensive experience delivering major utility transmission projects, including national grid or equivalent accreditation.

Responsibilities:
- Provide electrical discipline lead design input for HV transmission infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Prepare and review clarifications to RFIs, approve technical deliverables, and provide guidance to the wider engineering team.
- Deliver key input at project bid stage, covering resourcing, capability statements, delivery methodology plans and programmes.
- Collaborate closely with other project discipline leads and stakeholders to meet technical and commercial requirements.
- Act as the primary client interface, attending progress meetings and workshops.
- Ensure design and operations comply with client standards, safety and environmental regulations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues arising during design and construction.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, overseeing electrical design stages and site assessments.
- Integrate new technologies into infrastructure design, staying current with advancements.
Candidate Specification:
- Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of substation principles for transmission and distribution infrastructure. Experience with technical quality management, including review plans and approvals. Desirable: IOSH / NEBOSH certification; National Grid CDAE / LCDAE and Design Assurance (HV Plant) authorisations.
- Project Technical Lead Experience: Proven leadership of electrical engineering teams across all project life‑cycle stages. Strong quality assurance and cost control within scope and schedule. Ability to develop and support the electrical design team. Experience in proposal writing, methodology development and resource assessment.
- Design Coordination and Collaboration: Excellent coordination with civil, environmental, secondary and other disciplines. Capable of integrating primary electrical designs seamlessly into multidisciplinary plans.
- Attention to Detail: Proficient in reviewing and approving design documentation for FEED and detailed design. Ensures compliance with relevant standards.
- Communication and Leadership: Clear verbal and written communication skills. Leadership mindset for guiding teams and collaborating with stakeholders.
- Experience: Relevant experience in power transmission electrical engineering design across diverse projects.
- Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Chartered Engineer designation.
