The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Overview Of The Role
As a Principal Designer (Advisor) / CDM / Health & Safety Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting and advising clients in meeting their duties under CDM 2015 across the Energy Division of Mott MacDonald. Working on major frameworks and high‑profile energy projects, you will help shape safe, efficient design practices and ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your expertise while contributing to world‑class, multidisciplinary teams in the power generation and transmission sector.
Key Responsibilities And Duties Include:
- Prepare and maintain project‑level CDM and Building Safety Act (BSA) Compliance Strategies
- Support clients in identifying, obtaining, and managing pre‑construction information
- Review existing information and highlight gaps or further requirements
- Review designers’ hazard and risk information and support hazard register management
- Work closely with designers to identify, eliminate, or control foreseeable risks
- Collaborate with Project Managers to guide safe design through construction, operation, and maintenance stages
- Assist in preparing and completing the Health & Safety File
Candidate specification
Essential:
- HNC/HND or technical degree in engineering, energy, construction, or a related field
- Recognised Health & Safety qualification (NEBOSH Construction minimum; ideally NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 4‑7, Health & Safety Degree, or ICE H&S Registration)
- Chartered or working toward chartership (IET, CIOB, ICE, RICS, IOSH, CABE, RIBA, or equivalent)
- Proven experience advising on CDM Regulations within energy and infrastructure projects
- Strong level of technical competence
- Experience in high‑hazard or high‑reliability environments
- Experience across the full project lifecycle including design, construction, and handover
- Proactive and well‑organised approach
- Excellent communication and client‑facing skills
- Strong collaborative and team‑working capability
- Ability to work within budget and time constraints
- Strong technical writing skills
- Experience supporting design teams on major projects
Desirable:
- Experience conducting HSE inspections and audits
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and integrated management systems
- CSCS, Person, or similar competency cards
- Understanding of BS5975:2024 and temporary works design
