Role Overview

The Buildings Unit (BLD) supports a broad range of projects across the UK and mainland Europe.

The Information Communication Technology (ICT) Principal Engineer will design Security Systems and ICT Infrastructure within the Digital Infrastructure team, partnering with multidisciplinary Building Services Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver Security Systems and ICT infrastructure design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
• Engage with clients to understand requirements, develop and document appropriate solutions.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high‑quality service delivery.
• Support senior managers with commercial and contractual matters.
• Work autonomously within a team, carrying out building services projects.
• Prepare design documents including sketches, drawings, reports, schedules and specifications.
• Engage with projects through feasibility, concept, detail design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and in‑use phases.
• Review and coordinate designs with other design disciplines both internally and externally.
• Review and comment on third‑party designs, ensuring compliance with briefs and standards.
• Inspect and witness testing of systems under construction or as‑built, reporting findings.
• Keep updated on technical standards, product developments, and identify opportunities for training and growth.
• Support the learning and development of early‑career professionals in the team.

Essential Qualifications

• Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
• Extensive Security System and ICT infrastructure design experience across concept and detailed design stages.
• Capable to lead design and specification of CCTV systems, Access Control Systems, Building and Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems and Integrated Security Management Systems.
• Experience securing Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and similar high‑security sites.
• Experience leading structured design processes such as Home Office 'Operational Requirements.'
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams and coordinate with other disciplines.
• Delivery of coordinated 3D design models.
• Leading Security & ICT elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
• Track record in building services security systems & ICT engineering design and specification using industry software (NBS Create, REVIT, etc).
• Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience in sectors such as Mo D/defence, healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centres.
• Experience designing and specifying physical security measures for sites and buildings.
• Degree‑qualified Engineer (or equivalent) with a strong background in Electrical & ICT Building Services.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET, CIBSE or equivalent professional body.
• Awareness of Cyber Security design principles.
• Experience designing passive and active ICT network infrastructures, audio‑visual systems, fire detection, public address, voice alarm and EVC systems.
• Experience in work‑winning and bid support.
• Familiarity with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies.
• Up‑to‑date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
• Experience training graduates/Early Career Professionals (ECP).
• Capability to drive profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, and communicating in line with client expectations.
