The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland’s water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design.
Overview of the role: The Asset Management and Infrastructure Planning team is one of five subsectors within our Water Utilities Division, a 510-strong community of specialists across the UK. We work with UK and international water companies and infrastructure providers to deliver strategic, technical and systematic expertise across the following areas:
- Technical assurance of statutory and regulatory submissions (e.g., annual performance reporting, business cases, business plans, long-term strategies, operational plans)
- Water resource investment planning
- Wastewater and bioresources investment planning
- Strategic asset management and business planning
- Carbon and net-zero appraisal and strategic planning
- Integrated systems management
- Data analytics and decision-support tools
- Contract appraisal (NEC, PPP)
We are growing our capability in integrated water systems modelling and are seeking a technical frontrunner to help shape and advance this area. As a Strategic Investment Planning Modeller, you will undertake the creation, development, and assurance of integrated water system models. Your work will help clients understand and quantify future uncertainties across complex water and wastewater systems, enabling more resilient, efficient and sustainable long-term planning.
Candidate specification:
Essential:- Degree in water management, engineering, environmental science, or a related technical discipline
- Experience delivering and assuring modelling for one or more of the following: Water treatment, Water distribution, Wastewater network modelling, Wastewater treatment
- Strong interest in integrated water management and a desire to promote the development of modelling theory and practice
- Keen interest in promoting the introduction of new technical processes, methods, or modelling approaches
- Working towards chartership with a recognised professional institution, or IAM Certification
- Familiarity with UK water sector regulation
- Experience developing: Regional water resource plans, Water company plans (business plans, WRMPs, drought plans, wastewater and drainage plans, sludge strategies, regional water resource plans)
- Project management, client-facing, and consultancy skills
- Experience of options appraisal and best-value planning
- Experience in auditing and assurance processes
- Understanding and use of asset information for planning or modelling
- Strong report-writing, communication, and presentation skills
