Overview of the role
Mott Mac Donald is seeking an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Principal Engineer to design Security Systems and ICT Infrastructure with the ‘Digital Infrastructure' team within the Buildings division.
The role is based in one of the Southern UK offices (London, Croydon, Cambridge, Birmingham, Brighton or Bristol) and will involve working on national and international projects.
Key responsibilities and duties
- Deliver Security Systems and ICT infrastructure design for major projects from concept through to detailed design.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with architects and civil engineers.
- Work with clients to understand requirements, develop, define and document appropriate solutions.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring high‑quality service delivery.
- Support senior managers in the commercial and contractual aspects of projects.
- Work autonomously within a team carrying out building services projects.
- Prepare design documents including sketches, drawings, reports, schedules and specifications.
- Work at various project phases including feasibility, concept & detail design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and in‑use.
- Review and coordinate designs with other disciplines both internally and externally.
- Review and comment on third‑party designs and check against briefs and standards.
- Inspect and witness testing of under‑construction or as‑built systems and report findings.
- Keep updated on technical standards, product developments and identify opportunities for training, development and growth.
- Support the learning and development of early‑career professionals in the team.

- Proven experience delivering projects within the built environment.
- Extensive Security System and ICT infrastructure design experience across concept and detailed stages.
- Capability to lead design and specification of CCTV systems, access control systems, building and perimeter intruder detection systems and integrated security management systems.
- Experience securing Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and similar high‑security sites.
- Experience leading structured design processes such as Home Office ‘Operational Requirements'.
- Demonstrated leadership and coordination with other disciplines.
- Delivery of coordinated 3D design models.
- Leadership of Security & ICT elements of a large project or a portfolio of smaller projects.
- Track record in building services security systems & ICT engineering design and specification using relevant industry software (e. g. NBS Create, REVIT).
- Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations.
- Candidate specifications – Desirable
- Experience in Mo D/defence, healthcare, infrastructure, aviation, rail, residential or data centre sectors.
- Experience designing and specifying physical security measures for sites and buildings.
- Degree‑qualified Engineer with a strong background in Electrical & ICT Building Services.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IET, CIBSE, or equivalent professional body.
- Awareness of Cyber Security design principles.
- Experience designing passive and active ICT network infrastructures, audio‑visual systems, fire detection, public address, voice alarm and EVC systems.
- Experience in work‑winning and bid support.
- Familiarity with digital engineering tools and emerging technologies.
- Up‑to‑date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building and infrastructure design.
- Experience training graduates / early‑career professionals.
- Ability to drive project profitability by monitoring against budget, anticipating potential problems and communicating with clients.
