About the Water Utilities Division

The Water Utilities Division is Mott Mac Donald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland's water and wastewater challenges.

We provide advisory services, feasibility studies, and design services throughout the full project life cycle.

Overview of the Role

Principal Civil Engineer (Design Engineer) – lead design of major water supply infrastructure, innovate grey/blue‑green sewer solutions, and deliver cutting‑edge wastewater treatment plants.

• Lead the design of major water supply infrastructure to ensure sustainable water security.
• Contribute to innovative grey and blue‑green sewer solutions to reduce wastewater spills.
• Deliver cutting‑edge wastewater treatment plants to improve water quality in our rivers and coastlines.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Be responsible for the delivery of project(s), coordinating project team(s) to ensure excellent technical delivery within budget and programme.
• Produce and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and reports, proactively managing design risk to deliver constructable solutions.
• Represent the company in meetings, building strong relationships with our clients to enhance our reputation and secure further work.
• Deliver projects in close partnership with clients and contractors.
• Contribute to technical excellence and commercial success through forecasting and risk management, and producing bids and proposals.
• Work to Mott Mac Donald’s global standards and review Health, Safety and Welfare alongside environmental impact.
• Candidate Specification

Essential

• Chartered Status (CEng) with a recognised Professional Institution.
• Proven ability to deliver complex technical projects, ensuring compliance with relevant quality assurance and technical standards and supporting the development of less experienced staff.
• Demonstrable technical experience in design and the management of design teams.
• Strong communication skills with experience in effective collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams.
• Good understanding of designers’ responsibilities under CDM.

Desirable

• Able to travel to other offices and sites, as required.
• Track record in building teams and capability of junior staff.
• Experience in preparing successfully bids and in undertaking client engagement.
