Overview of the role

We are seeking a Radioactive Waste Consultant to join our growing team within the Energy Unit’s Nuclear; Defence and Civil division.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team of radiological experts, with opportunities for career growth, chartership, professional accreditation, and the chance to apply your skills to new challenges in a supportive environment.

This role offers flexible working arrangements, with hybrid working from our modern, well‑equipped offices. Occasional travel, including international visits, may be required.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a real impact in a critical sector, leveraging your expertise to contribute to meaningful projects across new build, SMRs, decommissioning, defence and regulation across the nuclear industry.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Advise on requirements for: radioactive waste characterisation, management, treatment, storage and packaging
  • Advise on the radiological impacts of liquid and gaseous discharges
  • Produce technical reports, such as Waste Strategies, BAT studies, sampling plans and regulatory compliance documents
  • Work closely with teams across the organisation to help deliver safe, reliable solutions for our nuclear clients
  • Support winning work
  • Mentor colleagues
  • Contribute to project delivery
  • Travel for site visits, meetings and international engagements as required

Candidate specification

Essential

  • A STEM degree or equivalent industrial experience
  • Competent in tools such as Microsoft Office, Teams and SharePoint
  • Knowledge of radioactive waste regulations, policies and best practices in the UK or internationally
  • Familiarity with waste disposal, storage and treatment facilities and their requirements
  • Understanding of the radioactive waste lifecycle, including decommissioning and remediation
  • Familiarity with Best Available Techniques (radiological or conventional)
  • Experience of modelling software, handling large data sets or data analysis

Desirable

  • Authoring and application of Best Available Techniques (radiological)
  • Methodology for assessing BAT for conventional (non‑radiological) design aspects
  • Demonstrable experience or training in PC Cream, IRAT2, ADMS (or other relevant radiological impact assessment software)
  • Radioactive Waste Management Cases for higher activity radioactive waste, documenting conditioning, storage and long‑term strategy for environmental performance
  • Radiation protection and ionising radiation regulations
  • Supporting safety case development
  • Radiation emergency preparedness arrangements
  • Conventional or hazardous waste management
  • Article 37 transboundary assessments
  • Sustainability
  • ILW disposability assessments
  • Environmental safety case
  • Generic Design Assessment
  • RPA/RWA qualifications or chartered status (or working towards these)
  • Strong communication skills and experience with stakeholders or regulators
