About our apprenticeships

Our apprenticeships are paid roles where you will learn and gain valuable on the job experience, whilst also completing classroom-based learning either in person or virtually with a college, university or training provider which upon completion of the apprenticeship leads to a nationally recognised qualification. The apprenticeship will typically be undertaken over two to six years depending on the level of the apprenticeship, and during this time you will be provided with real life experience working on a variety of exciting projects that are helping to shape tomorrow's world.

Job Description

Our apprenticeships span a range of different sectors and are based within a variety of different teams working on a wide range of projects, so as you can imagine, each role varies. If you're invited to an interview, this is when we will discuss in more detail the specifics of the job role you applied for and what it involves. You'll be working with graduates, experienced professionals, and other apprentices so an apprenticeship with us is the perfect opportunity to learn from a variety of people while understanding our values and culture. With our apprenticeships you can really make the role your own. The more you get involved and the more questions you ask, the more you will gain.

As a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice, your duties will include:

  • Project delivery – An awareness of business, client and end user needs throughout the project lifecycle. Plan and manage tasks, people and commercial budgets to deliver quality assured outputs on time and to client and industry specifications, standards and guidance.
  • Design – Define engineering and other constraints, identify risks and how these may be resolved through design. Develop safe and sustainable technical solutions and provide guidance to others by producing design models, calculations, reports and drawings, surveying a site, using applicable analysis and relevant codes.
  • Analysis – Identify and use applicable digital solutions, other data gathering tools and tests to solve technical problems. Evaluate the effectiveness of the analysis, refine as required, and apply to an integrated solution.
  • Construction – Determine construction methods and technical aspects of site activities. Identify and mitigate risk, develop and operate quality systems and health, safety and risk management procedure.

Candidate Specification

To join us for an apprenticeship you must meet the eligibility requirements of the relevant training provider. To join us for a Civil Engineering apprenticeship you must meet the eligibility requirements of the relevant training provider. These are:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above including English and Maths
  • 3 A Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above (minimum 96 UCAS points*) *training providers vary

We are looking for students with the following characteristics:

  • A methodical approach to problem solving.
  • The ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail.

You'll be enrolled onto Accelerate Your Future, a structured three-year soft-skills development programme which develops the strengths that we know apprentices need to be successful at Mott MacDonald. It also gives you the opportunity to network and meet other apprentices and graduates in your cohort. The programme is a mix of residential events, classroom-based learning, virtual webinars, and sustainability and social impact challenges.

In addition to developing your soft skills, we recognise that each person's career goals vary, so when rolling off the programme we provide you with the tools and support to develop your ongoing career the way you wish to. Alongside our vast library of e-learning courses available to you, you can choose which direction you want your career to go in.
