About the business unit
Mott MacDonald's support services are the driving force behind our organisation enabling us to run efficiently and effectively. The team works collaboratively to offer specialist advice, best practice and technology to all areas of our business specifically designed for our global reach. The Head of Technical Training & Development is the global face of technical training and development at Mott MacDonald. Working with several key stakeholders; including Global Practice Leaders, Subject Matter Experts, and regional learning and development leaders, this role aims to establish a global technical training and development program for an effective enterprise-wide approach for engineering and technical staff development and upskilling.
This includes but is not limited to:
- Reviewing our current approach and framework for technical training and development.
- Develop or oversee the development of technical content including a range of formal and informal, digital and in-person solutions.
- Running and co-facilitating live / structured events.
- Curating, contributing and driving use of a range of on-demand guidance and resources held on business systems.
- Develop a programmatic approach to both technical skills training as well as support the professional career development of technical leaders.
- Collaborating with the other Regional leads, Excellence disciplines and people leadership, to align the strategic priorities and associated annual plans for the program.
The key elements to the role are Strategy and Planning, Implementation and Operational Management.
Strategy and PlanningThrough strong internal networking, business partnerships, stakeholder engagement and collaboration, agree a prioritized plan for an enterprise wide program for technical training and development. Put together a comprehensive resource and budget plan for approval and sign-off by the Technical Excellence Executive. Work with practice leadership to identify and engage the right subject matter experts and mentors / coaches to enable the agreed plan. Work with other learning specialists, regional L&D leadership in particular - agree the learning approach most appropriate to meet needs (using both resources and courses to meet these needs). Identify and build targeted relationships (internal and external) as required for the continued success of the program (for example clients to partner with, certifying bodies, professional organizations / institutes and educational establishments).
Development & deployment of program solutionsHave overall responsibility for the development and deployment of the program and all associated technical learning content. Engage with Practice Leaders, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), People Leadership and regional L&D to define specific learning and performance outcomes required to meet the needs of the business and practice requirements. Provide support to SMEs and co-design blended learning solutions that meet the learning outcomes effectively. Collaborate with wider L&D teams to ensure digital resources and tools are effective with respect to the impact of the learning developed. Provide appropriate train the trainer and coaching / mentoring skills support to enable SMEs to effectively facilitate and support program participants. Use a blend of learning, communications and engagement strategies across multiple traditional and social channels to maximize reach and adoption.
Operational ManagementBe accountable for the operational delivery of the L&D program. Own the development and communication of the schedule of activities to meet the program needs. Implement a measurement and evaluation strategy to monitor effectiveness of solutions and embed a continuous improvement cycle into the solutions deployed. Make sure appropriate reporting is scoped and executed to effectively monitor and communicate progress and activity within the L&D program. Provide regular business updates on L&D activities, priorities and actions being undertaken. Own the collection, maintenance and reporting of professional information and skills of technical staff.
Knowledge and ExperienceDemonstrable experience successfully developing and implementing an enterprise-wise technical training and development program of similar size and complexity. Developed L&D background, combining modern, blended, learning methods with achievement of business outcomes. Experience leading a comprehensive programmatic approach to employee role and career development for technical professionals. Good domain knowledge working within the AEC or relevant industry type. Exceptional stakeholder management and internal consulting skills combined with solid commercial and financial acumen. Proven experience of leading, influencing and collaborating in a decentralized, multi-national organization. Excellent communicator, verbally and in writing with the ability to craft content for a variety of audiences and roles related to the L&D program.
