Role Purpose

The Safety Lead supports Motorsport UK's mission to deliver safe, sustainable and well-governed motorsport by providing expert safety leadership across circuits, venues, events and operational activities.

This is a broad safety management role that requires a safety generalist with strong technical, analytical and stakeholder management skills.

The postholder will play a key role in maintaining and continually improving Motorsport UK's Safety Management System (SMS), venue licensing framework, and the governance arrangements that support medical, rescue and recovery operations.

Working closely with organisers, venues, officials, committees, volunteers, emergency service providers and other key stakeholders, the Safety Lead will undertake venue inspections, support the investigation of incidents, analyse safety performance data and support the development of regulations, policies, operational frameworks and assurance processes.

The role is focused on identifying and managing risk across the sport, promoting best practice, and driving continual improvement in motorsport safety.

Primary Objectives

The primary objectives associated with this role will be

  • Support the delivery and continual improvement of Motorsport UK's Safety Management System.
  • Assist with the development of Motorsport UK's venue licensing programme, inspections and assurance activity.
  • Support the development, implementation and governance of Motorsport UK's Medical, Rescue and Recovery regulations, policies operational frameworks and standards.
  • Support safety investigations, analyse incident data and identify opportunities to reduce risk and improve safety performance.
  • Work collaboratively with committees, venues, organisers and other stakeholders to develop and maintain effective safety frameworks, systems and best practice.
  • Support alignment of Motorsport UK's safety frameworks with FIA regulations, UK legislation and recognised industry best practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • In addition to the core objectives listed above, the Safety Lead will be responsible for:
  • Venue Licensing
  • Conducting inspections of permanent circuits and temporary venues.
  • Supporting the issue and renewal of Motorsport UK Track Licences.
  • Investigating incidents, preparing technical reports and making recommendations to reduce risk and improve safety.
  • Analysing incident, injury and near-miss data to identify trends to support evidence-based safety improvements.
  • Supporting the development of regulations, guidance documents and training content.
  • Delivering presentations, training courses and guidance to officials, organisers and venues.
  • Medical Regulation & Governance
  • Support the development, review and implementation of Motorsport UK's Medical Regulations and associated governance framework.
  • Assist in developing policies and standards relating to event medical provision, medical facilities and emergency medical planning.
  • Support the governance and quality assurance of medical services delivered at Motorsport UK Permitted events.
  • Assist in reviewing medical incident reports, lessons learned and recommendations to improve medical response and competitor welfare.
  • Contribute to the development of medical guidance documents, operational procedures and best practice publications.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer, medical advisory groups and external healthcare stakeholders to ensure compliance with recognised standards and legislation.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Motorsport UK's Rescue Regulations, operational policies and governance arrangements.
  • Assist in defining minimum rescue capability requirements for licensed venues and events.
  • Participate in the review of rescue operations following significant incidents to identify improvements in capability, training and equipment.
  • Support the development of rescue operational procedures, competency standards and training requirements.
  • Assist in evaluating rescue equipment, technologies and operational practices to ensure continual improvement and alignment with industry best practice.
  • Work with rescue providers and officials to ensure consistent implementation of Motorsport UK's rescue standards.
  • Recovery Regulation & Governance
  • Support the development and governance of Motorsport UK's vehicle recovery regulations and operational standards.
  • Assist in establishing safe systems of work for vehicle recovery operations during motorsport events.
  • Review recovery procedures following incidents and identify opportunities to improve operational safety, efficiency and resilience.
  • Support the development of competency requirements and training guidance for recovery personnel.
  • Assist in evaluating recovery equipment and operational practices against recognised best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with recovery providers and organisers to ensure compliance with Motorsport UK's recovery requirements.
  • Governance & Continuous Improvement
  • Support the periodic review of Motorsport UK's safety-related regulations, policies and governance documents.
  • Monitor developments in FIA regulations, UK legislation and industry standards, making recommendations for regulatory updates where appropriate.
  • Support safety audits and assurance activities across venues and events.
  • Contribute to cross-functional safety improvement projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Represent Motorsport UK at internal and external meetings, working groups where appropriate.
  • Core Competencies

Below are the core competencies, knowledge and skills required to be successful in this role:

  • Degree (or equivalent professional qualification) in Engineering, Safety or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong understanding of engineering risk assessment, safety management systems and governance principles.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to investigate incidents and identify root causes.
  • Strong report writing and technical communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, risk management methodologies and event safety management.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multiple organisations.
  • High level of organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the UK, with occasional weekend working.
  • Membership of IOSH, IMech E, ICE or another relevant professional institution.
  • Experience within motorsport, automotive engineering or another high-risk sporting environment.
  • Experience of conducting incident investigations using recognised methodologies.
  • Experience in using CAD packages such as Autodesk's Auto CAD.
  • Knowledge of emergency planning, resilience or major event safety management.
  • Experience of developing regulations, governance frameworks or operational policy.
  • Knowledge of motorsport medical, rescue and recovery operations.
  • Experience working with emergency services, healthcare providers or rescue organisations.
