Motorsport UK, the national governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in the UK, is looking for a Commercial Counsel to lead its commercial legal function. Based at its Bicester Motion headquarters, you will manage day-to-day commercial matters and provide practical legal advice across the organisation.
The Role
Reporting to the Regulatory Counsel, you will lead the triage and progression of commercial instructions received by the Legal Department, working closely with the Paralegal and Consultant General Counsel. You will use sound judgement to decide which matters need senior input, escalating complex, high-value or strategically significant matters such as litigation, major commercial arrangements and governance issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, draft and negotiate commercial contracts, including supplier, services and consultancy agreements, NDAs and event organisation agreements
- Manage the Legal Department's contract schedule, tracking deadlines, renewals, termination dates and outstanding actions
- Advise internal teams on contractual matters, including events, championships and sponsorship agreements
- Advise on procurement and intellectual property, and manage the data protection process, including data subject access requests and potential breaches
- Advise on data protection and privacy matters, including licence declarations, consent requirements and PECR compliance
- Manage and triage incoming Legal Department enquiries and maintain records of legal instructions and advice
- Develop guidance, templates and self-service resources so departments can manage routine matters independently
About You
- Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, or equivalent UK qualification
- At least 2 years’ in-house legal experience (within sport is desirable)
- Experience of managing and advising on commercial contracts, in-house or in private practice
- Experience of advising on data protection matters
- Strong legal analysis, drafting and communication skills
- Strong case-management skills, with the confidence to challenge stakeholders constructively
- Desirable: experience in sports, media or entertainment matters, knowledge of competition law, and an understanding of motorsport
Key Details
- Location: Motorsport UK, Bicester Motion (hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day remote)
- Contract: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (core hours 09:00-17:30, Monday to Friday)
