For many fans of Formula One, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern F1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists. Much of our success is thanks to the diversity of thought and spectrum of skill sets held within the team, our ability to recognise unique contributions from individual team members is just a part of why we love what we do.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented CFD Engineer to join us in developing the next generation of Formula 1 hybrid power units. Based in the heart of the Powertrains design office, you will be utilising a suite of simulations tools to help maximise PU performance. Innovative PU performance ideas are a core attribute of being a part of the Powertrains team. This role will develop these innovative PU performance ideas in collaboration with the wider Thermofluids team. Using a suite of simulation tools, you will look to develop thermodynamic and combustion concepts and report them out to a high quality and accuracy under tight deadlines.

Your role:

  • To support the definition of optimum design, development and setup targets for maximising PU performance.
  • To prepare, run, post process and communicate simulation results and prepare technical summary reports with clear recommended performance direction with supporting evidence.
  • To improve correlation of simulated results to measured test data.
  • To contribute towards the development and improvement of simulation tools and analysis methodology contributing towards car and PU performance.
  • Create, develop and assess new Combustion and Gas Exchange ideas under the guidance of the Thermodynamic Simulation Team Leader.
  • To support the selection of the correct type of simulation for the performance problem.
  • To ensure that developments are in directions that are aligned to and support/enable future predicted engine requirements.
  • To maintain simulation run records in line with Simulation Group requirements.

Essential skills:

  • A Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in F1 hybrid power unit simulation is advantageous but high-performance racing engine experience or involvement in high-performance R&D projects is a pre-requisite.
  • A high level of Mechanical Engineering competence in both technical and practical applications is advantageous.
  • Interpreting simulation data, summarising and reporting findings.
  • A thorough understanding of performance thermodynamics and its contribution to on track performance.
  • Practical knowledge of engine testing methodologies is advantageous.
