Alpine F1 Team are looking for Aerodynamicists to join us at the pinnacle of motorsport. With a dynamic and supportive team mindset and world-leading facilities in rural Oxfordshire, you will be expected to contribute across the full life cycle of aerodynamic development from concept and hypothesis, CFD, Wind Tunnel and track analysis from the Aero Performance Group.

Role

This role reports to the Head of Aero Development Group within one of our aerodynamic development teams, who contribute to conceptual and iterative development of an allocated car area, to the benefit of overall race car performance.

You will liaise with other teams in the aero department including: model designers, surfacers, CFD methodology, track side aerodynamicists, WT technicians and model makers. At all times seeking to use your skills and experience to improve the methodology and procedures used in developing your car area. Aerodynamic projects will need to be proactively managed through the development lifecycle with appropriate involvement at each stage.

Key accountabilities:

  • Develop aerodynamic solutions that improve the competitive performance of the race car, under the guidance of a Head of Aero Development Group.
  • Ensure that all geometry created conforms to the legality requirements of the F1 technical regulations and be proactive in identifying efficient methods of providing this assurance. This includes the use of any CAD checking tools provided as part of the department procedures.
  • Provide effective management of development projects, in order to meet deadlines set by management.
  • Create CAD surface geometry to support the development process to the standards required by department procedures and with a view to practicality for full size car application.
  • Create and run CFD cases and analyse the results generated, engaging with methodology colleagues and ensuring that correlation with other domains is monitored.
  • Liaise with surfacing designers, making use of their expertise to specify effective CAD models that allow rapid generation of options that can be used in CFD/WT and FSC release surface files.
  • Prepare WT tests using established procedures, working with model designers and WT project engineers where necessary.
  • Liaise with model shop to deliver WT parts that meet the requirements of planned tests, overseeing these programmes when they run and ensuring that the results gained are sufficient and robust to enable conclusions to be drawn.
  • Engage with track aerodynamicists, follow the track testing of parts resulting from your projects and use the understanding gained to further development.
  • Communicate your results and findings with other team members and the wider department, including through mandated reporting and presentation in review sessions.

The Person

We are looking for someone educated to at least Bachelor level in Aerospace Engineering or an equivalent discipline with significant aerodynamic content. Ideally you will have at least three years of experience.

We expect experience of WT testing and understanding of techniques and technologies, working knowledge of CAD and CFD in a motorsport environment and the ability to deploy aerodynamic theory in the solution of specific problems.

Excellent communication, liaison and team working skills are a must, as working together with colleagues in other disciplines is essential to the efficient function of the department. You will be willing to pay attention to details, understand the scope of a project and manage your own tasks to adhere to deadlines.
