Mothercare Global Brand is looking for a Garment focused Assistant Designer to join the team on a permanent basis. The Garment Assistant Designer will be a creative individual, with strong illustrative and organisational skills in order to support the team to meet deadlines.
You will have exposure to the full design process including researching trends, identifying competitors, assisting in pulling the new seasons ranges together, to assist in the creation of original graphics, tech packs and artwork briefing sheets and liaising with suppliers; all to produce products that truly fit the needs and aspirations of parents worldwide.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
- Support key designer and head of design with range planning and design creation
- Collaborative working with wider design team and external resource.
- Report on new directions, developments and product opportunities which can be incorporated into new ranges
- Regularly review global competitors and evaluate sources of inspiration in the industry and wider markets; be alert to the requirements of the critical global markets through establishing strong relationships with Commercial Business Partners
- Understand demands of critical path and ensure deadlines are met and that products being designed are producible
- Support to design product for good, better best price architecture
- Support on research, trend, and ensure product and colour information is produced for the department in line with company, divisional and department strategy, providing choice for customers
- Build a knowledge of the product industry in which you work to ensure that design development is aligned with industry opportunities and constraints e.g., a strong understanding of child safety requirements.
- Work closely with technical team to ensure Mothercare quality and safety standards are met
- Work closely with Merchandising function to understand global performance and global product requirements to build the range
- Ensure that samples are processed to meet deadlines
- Ensure all meeting prep is completed in line with deadlines
- Deputise for Designer and head of design as required
Knowledge & Skills
- Creative – You will have a strong sense of colour & drawing ability and will enjoy working to high standards & delivering profit to the business.
- You will be able to demonstrate your individual design flair and understand the Mothercare brand “handwriting”
- With excellent presentation and communication skills, you will be confident in presenting your themes and ideas to the product teams.
- Advanced user in Illustrator and good skills in Photoshop
- Ability to create detailed and accurate design specifications to high standard

- You will demonstrate a commercial understanding of both the global babywear and kids wear market.

- This team works 2-4 days per week from our Apsley office. This is non negotiable, so please only apply if you’re within a reasonable commute of the office. There may occasions where you are required in the office additional days during the week however, these are preplanned.
