An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced IC Senior / Principal Engineer (Bridges) to support the delivery of a major infrastructure programme within the West Midlands. This is a key, site-based role embedded within the client delivery environment, acting as the on-site representative for the design team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting construction activities, resolving technical queries, managing design compliance processes, and ensuring bridge and structural works are delivered in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards. The role requires close collaboration with delivery teams, quality teams, designers, and site engineers to provide practical and compliant engineering solutions across bridge and structural assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to bridge and structural technical queries raised from site teams.
  • Review and manage Field Change Requests (FCRs) and Non‑Conformance Records (NCRs), ensuring responses are technically compliant and aligned with project requirements.
  • Provide clear technical guidance in accordance with approved designs, standards, specifications, and approved departures.
  • Prepare or review supporting technical documentation, including amended drawings, specifications, and schedules where required.
  • Attend Work Inspection Requests (WIRs) alongside the client's engineering representatives.
  • Identify and resolve design or constructability issues, providing practical engineering solutions.
  • Review Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) relating to bridge and structural works.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings with delivery, quality, and design stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input into temporary works certification where permanent works may be impacted.
  • Monitor site progress and report technical concerns or foreseeable issues to the Technical Lead.
  • Support collaborative working between design and construction teams to ensure efficient project delivery.

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer.
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles in accordance with Eurocodes.
  • Proven experience in bridge engineering and bridge design.
  • Experience responding to technical queries, NCRs, and design change processes within major infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methodologies and site‑based engineering coordination.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams in a fast‑paced delivery environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on large‑scale infrastructure, rail, or highways projects.
  • Experience operating within integrated design and construction teams.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance processes, inspections, and temporary works coordination.
