Scottish Power Renewables are looking for a CDM Principal Designer Coordinator to join their EA2 project.

Duration: initial contract to 31st Dec 2026, with renewal in line with the project requirements (2028 estimate)

Location: London or Glasgow/hybrid style working

Rate: Inside IR35, Umbrella and PAYE options available

Main Purpose of Job: ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) is appointed as the Principal Designer for the East Anglia Two (EA2) project. The Project Engineering Manager has the role of Principal Designer Lead on the projects and is responsible for ensuring that SPR fulfils the duties of a Principal Designer (PD) under the CDM 2015 Regulations. Working as part of the Design Assurance team, the CDM PD Coordinator will be key in supporting the Engineering Manager in fulfilling this remit.

The CDM PD Coordinator will be responsible for monitoring the development of the design ensuring CDM compliance (PD approach) throughout the lifecycle of the project, where hazard identification and safety is a priority. They must ensure that all Designers working on the project comply with their duties under CDM ensuring that they co-operate with each other and liaise with the Principal Contractor (PC) for the duration of the project.

In addition to specific CDM related tasks, the CDM PD Coordinator will also work closely with the wider Engineering Management and Design Assurance team to support workstreams related to design assurance, certification and interface management. To successfully fulfil this remit, the successful candidate should have extensive experience in project engineering and design coordination roles, in addition to a good working knowledge of CDM. Ideally, this experience will be within the Offshore Wind sector.

Key Tasks:

  • Take part in developing and ensuring Project procedures are followed, including but not limited to: CDM Strategy and Procedure, Design Management Plan including Design Risk Registers, Hazard Management in Design, Interface Management Plan.
  • Identify and implement improvements to existing procedures as required to improve the Principal Designer activities and general CDM compliance. Develop new procedures where appropriate.
  • Maintain the Pre-Construction Information, Pre-Construction Interface Matrix and Pre-Construction Interface Register.
  • Review communications with Tenderers and Contractors relating to project procedures. In the case of Tenders, that would entail the evaluation of proposals. In the case of Contracts, to identify and implement the required actions (documents, reports, meetings, presentations, or others) related to Principal Designer duties and CDM compliance.
  • Ensure the Principal Designer prepares the Health and Safety File. Liaise closely with the Principal Designer to ensure the structure and content of the file are per the expectations and requirements of CDM Regulations. Support fully this process where and when necessary.
  • Identify the project documents relevant to the Principal Design Duty and CDM compliance. Review such documents and identify and perform the required actions, including but not limited to producing comments, organize clarifications, produce clarifying documents, hold meetings, etc.
  • Take part in design meetings to oversee the development of the design from Principal Designer and CDM compliance perspective.
  • Organise and/or participate in interface meetings (or other relevant type of meetings) with Contractors and Subcontractors, to ensure actions and decisions are understood and recorded.
  • Monitor and report on performance and progress of Designers, Contractors and Subcontractors (as applicable) regarding Principal Designer duties and CDM compliance.
  • Attend Temporary Works Meetings and arrange PD/PC meetings.
  • Additionally, the CDM PD Coordinator will be required to support the wider Engineering Management team in the following activities: Design assurance process development. Support and coordinate between Project Package teams in relation to design assurance practices and processes, identification and assessment and documentation of design related risks. Due diligence and auditing of consultants and contractors. Support packages in conducting suitable design, construction and operability reviews. Support the Engineering Management team and the wider Project Team in ad-hoc activities as required, when reasonable and related to the role and/or skills.

Key Criteria:

  • Degree qualified within a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards) and Membership of an appropriate professional institution, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working on projects (UK Offshore Wind preferred) under The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and knowledge of UKs Health and Safety Legislation in general.
  • Completion of relevant CDM training courses (Principal Designer training preferred).
  • Experience in Engineering Design roles, preferably on large multi-disciplinary infrastructure/ energy projects. Design Management experience will be positively assessed.
  • At least four years post-graduate experience working on pre-FID and Execution stage offshore windfarm projects, or similar.
  • Competent on MS Office, Electronic Document Management Systems and able to review design drawings in CAD software.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills, to collaborate effectively with the wider project team including Third Parties, Contractors, Subcontractors and Contractors.
  • The selected person will be part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, distributed across various locations in the UK (mainly London and Glasgow) and Europe.
  • Availability and flexibility to attend face-to-face meetings in SPR offices in London and Glasgow. Suitability to travel occasionally to meetings and site visits within the UK and Europe.

Remote Working:

  • Suitable internet connection for videoconferences, uploading and downloading large files, and modern remote working and collaboration software.
  • Adequate hardware (camera and headset) to clearly hear, see, be heard and be seen.
  • Suitable conditions to participate actively in the videoconferences.
