Research & Development Engineer Portsmouth – £40k-£50k

Morson Talent are supporting our prestigious client with the recruitment of a dynamic Research & Development Engineer on a permanent contract.

The successful engineer will be required to support the design, development, testing and deployment of in-house computer storage testing and secure data erasure equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Understand and apply principles of digital and analogue electronics in product development and problem-solving.
Support electronic and PCB design (training provided if needed).
Assemble and configure PC-based and embedded systems used in test equipment.
Install, configure, and maintain Linux-based operating systems and software.
Conduct software testing and evaluation of in-house applications.
Perform basic scripting or programming (e.g., Bash, Python, C) for automation and diagnostics.
Use soldering skills for board-level work and prototype builds.
Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, test logs, and build instructions.
Provide technical support to global users of our test equipment via email, remote tools, or in-person.
Develop innovative solutions to technical and operational challenges.
Work in accordance with ISO 9001 standards and participate in quality audits.

PERSONAL:

Key Requirements:

Understanding of digital and analogue electronics
Some experience (or strong interest) in PCB and circuit design
Experience with PC assembly and software installation
Strong working knowledge of Linux
Soldering skills (through-hole and SMT)
Comfortable with basic programming or scripting (e.g. Python, Bash)
Software testing and evaluation experience
Strong documentation and communication skills
Self-starter, proactive, and able to work independently
Willingness to learn and develop new skills

Additional Experience (Not Essential):

PCB design using KiCAD, Altium or Eagle
Knowledge of data storage technologies (SATA, NVMe, SAS)
Experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic and bus analysers)
Familiarity with secure data erasure standards
Technical customer support experience

About the Role:

Full-time, hands-on engineering role
Based in the UK with occasional remote support for international clients
Involves assembling, configuring, and supporting proprietary test equipment
