We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal CS&A Architect to be based at our clients premises in Warrington, Cheshire.

About the Project:

The Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) is being constructed on the Sellafield Limited (SL) site in Cumbria. The project is an integral part of the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo (MSSS) Program addressing the cleanup of one of the most hazardous legacy facilities on the SL site. When complete, the BEP is expected to treat nuclear waste recovered from the MSSS, immobilize it, and prepare it for long-term storage. In addition, the BEP may also process waste recovered during the decommissioning of other significant SL facilities including the First General Magnox Storage Pond and the Pile Fuel Storage Pond.

About the Role:

With a minimum of 10 years nuclear experience, the ideal candidate should have experience of working with a regulated and quality assured system (preferably nuclear) in roles reliant upon pragmatic design judgement and where engineering was a major part of the role.

Project Specific Requirements:

  • Report to SL CSA RE on a daily basis.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and support to JV CSA design and site engineering team.
  • Be prepared to attend the Warrington office min 3 days per week and Sellafield site on a regular basis (ideally fortnightly) to confidently interact and engage with the multi-discipline JV construction team and their subcontractors as required.
  • Review and comment on CSA JV design submissions during development, including site modifications and completing NFR documents and submitting to SL Doc Control.
  • Review and accept/reject design submissions, sign and submit PMACD (Project Managers Approval) to SL Doc Control.
  • Review and accept or reject TQ/PP submissions.
  • Review the progress of all Architectural detail design drawings, calculations and documents to As Built status as produced by the JV CS&A designers.
  • Working knowledge of fire strategy arrangements. Detailed understanding and experience in production of fire rated solutions.
  • Attend meetings with fire consultants to review conventional and nuclear fire issues.
  • Interface with multi discipline design team on project issues.
  • Liaise with SL capability as required to substantiate site issues encountered during construction.
  • Support to Safety Case work including DJRs.
  • Engage with design partner (JV) in pre-submission discussions, including TQs and PPs.
  • Provide support to JV in the completion of the Building Regulation Compliance Document.

Fire Strategy & Fire Stopping:

  • Attend meetings with Fire Consultants to review Conventional and Nuclear fire issues.
  • Provide support to JV in relation to technical information as and when required.
  • Review Fire Strategy Plans against works on site and vice versa.
  • Consider and assist in the preparation of solutions to fire related issues with the JV Architect as and when they arise.
  • Take part in weekly reviews of proposed changes to fire stopping details with JV Architect and specialist sub-contractor.
  • Regularly review the Navisworks model against progress on site.

Other Disciplines:

  • Attend model reviews with other areas/disciplines. Assess impact on CS&A architectural scope of the issues discussed, such as building regulation and legislative compliance including fire escape routes and travel distances, stairs, finishes and building security.

BEPPS DIF Interfaces and Building Security:

  • Keep updated regarding ongoing building interface boundary issues with adjacent plant, with the site construction team.
  • Prepare for project and adjacent plant to become one facility. Review, update and eventually oversee the CS&A scope during the transition to one facility.
  • Retain ownership of and oversee all aspects of the buildings security boundary.
  • Update the security plans, sections and specification as require and to As Built status.

Roof & Cladding:

  • Oversee and support the JV design team with the completion on site of all remaining roof and cladding scope to ensure fully water tight building envelope. Works include:
  • Repairs to damaged wall panels.
  • Roof gutter lining water ingress issue to be resolved.
  • Drainage connection to gutter and the associated overflow connections have been completed.

External Works:

  • Good design understanding and working knowledge of all external work aspects.
  • Review and comment on all interfaces between the external works and the building external envelope as construction progresses.
  • Keep regular engagement with the JV construction team and supply chain on site. Attend weekly meetings as required.
  • Attend weekly Risk Review meetings and support EWNs.

Site Visits:

  • Generally, visit site (bi-weekly) for the day.
  • Liaise with the site construction team, conduct or take part in site walk downs to oversee, discuss and help resolve any CS&A related site construction issues.
  • Inspect and record progress of CS&A architectural scope, including fire stopping, door installation, wall, ceiling and floor finishes, stair, handrails & guarding installation and built in and loose furniture installation.
  • Inspect rooms under commissioning control and assess & record the CS&A scope of work still to be completed engaging SL Construction IC in relation to snagging works.
  • Agree to the completed status of sample rooms to be used as the quality standard for all room completions.
  • Hold meetings with construction team members or specialist sub-contractors to discuss ongoing issues or matters to be raised in pending TQs/PPs/IFAs.
  • Ensure planning requirements are met and ensure any changes are incorporated for final planning sign off. Liaise with SL Development and Planning department as required.
  • Support Safety Case team and Construction including during Fire Officer site and Operation team site walk downs in support of plant handover and permissioning.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Architectural Degree or equivalent.
  • Chartered Architect (RIBA 3).
  • Expertise demonstrable in major project areas relevant to the architectural discipline with a track record of successful application of specialist knowledge or skills.
  • Ability to provide strategic guidance based on knowledge and experience of projects across a portfolio to inform and direct projects and programmes.
  • Ability to provide leadership within an architectural function.
  • Experience of working within the nuclear sector, new build and decommissioning projects, in roles reliant upon professional engineering expertise and judgement.
  • Understanding of design principles and the ability to apply them.
  • Working knowledge of British Standards, Building Regulations and Planning Legislation relevant to a Nuclear Licensed Site.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Full UK driving license or equivalent that permits driving in the UK.
  • Ability to meet the requirements for security clearance in the UK.
