This role is for a Senior/Lead Structural Engineer, working on the Dreadnought Nuclear submarine. Knowledge of Steel Structures analysis is essential.
£40 – £50 per hour LTD Outside IR35
Manchester based – maybe an opportunity for hybrid after initial embedding period.
4 day week 6 month rolling contract long term.
Role Description
To execute, evaluate, deliver and manage complex engineering and/or cross functional tasks or programmes of work recognising stakeholder and customer requirements. Also to identify and implement opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that professional capability of the business and individual are maintained and improved.
The Specialist Structures Engineering (SSR) team is a specialist team of Engineers, who together provide the business with the capability to design all of the major structural elements that support the build of a nuclear submarine. This includes the design of rigs, jigs and fixtures, over a vast range of load bearing capacities, including small castings to submarine mega units. The team is regularly faced with tight deadlines requiring resolution in order to support the submarine build schedule. The team comprises a mix of experienced Mechanical, Structural and Civil Engineers.
Key Accountabilities and Deliverables
- Analysis of complex steel structures utilising Eurocodes, British Standards and BAE standards, to support submarine build.
- Knowledge of specific regulations & requirements beyond that used within BAE Systems i.e., LOLER, codes of compliance, weld specifications, geometric tolerance.
- Knowledge and experience using, and interpreting computer based analytical techniques including finite element analysis, CAD modelling and engineering schematics (Abaqus, S-Frame).
- Knowledge of the manufacturing, assembly, lifting, handling, and installation processes.
- Knowledge of the facility and site restrictions applicable to the shipping, handling, alignment and installation of hull units, large equipment, and structures.
- Support towards production of concept drawings, layouts, and other technical outputs consistent with contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget demands.
- Responsibility for approvals, checking analysis and outputs.
Subject Knowledge and Qualifications
- Degree qualified in either Structural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, with a structural bias.
- Circa 5 years experience in a relevant and related environment.
- Expertise in structural steel analysis.
- Good understanding of mechanical engineering, structural steelwork, knowledge of lifting handling and LOLER.
- Working knowledge of ABAQUS (Software), Foran, MathCAD and Excel.
- Previous knowledge in a production environment – experience in a marine production environment advantageous.
- Chartered Engineer, or capable of becoming chartered within 12 months.
