NRS Dounreay are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to join them on a long term fixed contract basis.

Duration: Fixed term (18-24 months)

Full time/part time: Full time

A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Structural/Civil Engineer with the fuel cycle area (FCA). The purpose of the role is to lead and manage civil engineering activities, provide technical authority and oversight, and ensure that all civil engineering deliverables are completed to the required quality, standards, and regulatory expectations.

As we deliver the FCA programme, structural and civil engineering remains critical to our success. Our projects are complex and demanding, requiring strong technical leadership, sound judgement, and effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. We are looking for a Senior Structural/Civil Engineer who can lead design and delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. You will also help develop our structural and civil engineering capability, supporting, mentoring, and managing colleagues, and setting the example as a role model within the team.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Control and develop technical engineering strategies, plans and procedures
  • Develop and execute an engineering and safety case delivery strategy, optimising plans to respond to changes when necessary
  • Apply health, safety, environmental and waste management processes with operational and engineering activities taking advice where necessary from appropriate specialists
  • Validate the completion of activities to ensure compliance with procedures, legislation and quality standards
  • Liaise effectively with regulators and stakeholders on specific projects
  • Design and evaluate the technical governance of projects
  • Undertake project governance roles as required
  • Establish and maintain design authority arrangements
  • Identify resource requirements to deliver engineering tasks
  • Develop an effective technical organisation to manage fit for purpose engineering design and safety project delivery in support of the site performance plan
  • Manage the preparation, approval and issue of technical specifications
  • Support the project in the delivery of projects/programmes of work and sanction approvals
  • Identify, optimise, validate and approve engineering solutions for projects
  • Establish and maintain quality control procedures
  • Fulfil role of principal designer
  • Fulfil role of temporary works coordinator
  • Support the project manager and facility operations team as required
  • Perform the responsibilities of authorisations relevant to post
  • Manage Dounreay staff as a line manager

Attributes and Experience:

  • Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or equivalent based on Engineering Council Standard for Incorporated Engineers
  • Considerable structural and/or civil engineering design and site experience
  • Good understanding of supply chain and knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Knowledge and experience of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, NEC project manager accreditation desirable
