Project Engineer

3-month project-based assignment supporting MEICA team?

Overview

The primary purpose of the role will be to deliver three specific pieces of work, with potential additional support required to assist with our wider continuous improvement programme.

The role will involve travel across our national network, including visits to hubs and workshops, and will require close collaboration with the MEICA team and a range of Trust colleagues. The successful candidate can be based anywhere within reasonable travelling distance of a Trust hub.

Background & Experience Required

An M&E background at a leadership level would be advantageous, with qualifications to a minimum of HNC/HND level in a relevant discipline.

Applicants should also possess:

  • IOSH and/or NEBOSH health and safety training.
  • Experience managing teams and/or delivering similar technical and compliance activities.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Practical experience applying Lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies would be highly desirable.

Typical Profiles

The role would suit individuals who have operated at a level such as:

  • Principal M&E Engineer / Principal Electrical Engineer - strong technical credibility, experience developing and reviewing RAMS, Safe Systems of Work and COSHH assessments, with the ability to influence engineering teams across multiple locations.
  • M&E Maintenance Manager / Engineering Manager - operational leadership experience, responsibility for compliance, safe systems of work, audit readiness and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance Manager (Engineering Environment) - strong understanding of governance, RAMS, COSHH and document control, combined with sufficient M&E credibility to work effectively with engineers.
  • Continuous Improvement Manager / Lean Practitioner - particularly suited to the Lean and 5S elements, ideally supported by experience within an engineering or maintenance environment.

Delivery Requirements

1. RAMS & Safe Systems of Work

Working alongside our Principal M&E Engineer and Regional Senior M&E Engineers to:

  • Review existing RAMS and Safe Systems of Work for priority MEICA/SCADA activities.
  • Identify missing, outdated, duplicated or inconsistent documentation.
  • Develop a standard format and minimum content requirements.
  • Prioritise documentation based on risk, frequency and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare revised and new documentation for review and approval.
  • Align RAMS and Safe Systems of Work with Agility standard jobs, PPMs and checklists.
  • Recommend document ownership, review frequency and change-control arrangements.

Outcome: A prioritised and controlled suite of technically robust RAMS and Safe Systems of Work, ready for formal approval and consistent national application.

2. COSHH Management

Working alongside our Regional Senior M&E Engineers to:

  • Review existing COSHH assessments, Safety Data Sheets and substance registers.
  • Identify missing, outdated, duplicated or inconsistent records.
  • Review storage, segregation, labelling and disposal arrangements.
  • Verify workshop and vehicle substances are included within registers and assessments.
  • Develop a standard format for recording substances, controls, locations, ownership and review dates.
  • Identify opportunities to remove or substitute hazardous substances where appropriate.
  • Recommend arrangements for the ongoing management and communication of COSHH requirements.

Outcome: A consistent and controlled COSHH framework, including an accurate substance register, current assessments, defined storage requirements, document ownership and an agreed review process.

3. Lean Principles & 5S Implementation

Working alongside our Principal M&E Engineer and Regional Senior M&E Engineers to:

  • Drive the application of Lean principles across M&E workshops and service vans.
  • Apply a structured 5S methodology:
    • Sort
    • Set in Order
    • Shine
    • Standardise
    • Sustain

Outcome: Lean methodologies successfully applied at our Doncaster depot and two vans within the YNE region, with evidenced improvements. A framework and consistent standard developed for future rollout across M&E workshops and vehicles nationally.
