Power BI Developer - £450 - £500 a day - London/ Hybrid - Central Government - 6 month initial contract

We are seeking an experienced Power BI Developer to support the development and enhancement of reporting and analytical capabilities across a range of digital transformation and business improvement initiatives.

The successful candidate will work closely with business stakeholders, subject matter experts, delivery teams and technical colleagues to design and implement high-quality reporting solutions that provide trusted management information and actionable insights.

This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical expertise in Microsoft Power BI, data modelling and analytics, alongside the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The role will contribute to improving how data is used across the organisation, enabling evidence-based decision-making and supporting strategic, operational and regulatory outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Design, develop and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards and data visualisations that support organisational decision‑making.
  • Work with stakeholders to gather, analyse and document reporting requirements.
  • Translate business needs into practical and user‑centred reporting solutions.
  • Develop and maintain scalable semantic models and datasets using Power BI best practice.
  • Create and optimise DAX measures, calculations and business metrics.
  • Use Power Query and data transformation techniques to prepare data from multiple sources.
  • Connect and integrate data from a variety of systems, including SQL databases, spreadsheets, APIs and other corporate applications.
  • Support the definition and implementation of key performance indicators (KPIs) and management information frameworks.
  • Review and improve existing reports to enhance usability, accessibility and performance.
  • Implement appropriate security controls, including Row Level Security (RLS), where required.
  • Publish and manage reports and datasets within the Power BI Service.
  • Support data refresh processes, gateways, workspace administration and deployment activities.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality, performance and reporting issues.
  • Maintain clear documentation of data models, reporting logic and technical designs.
  • Contribute to data governance, reporting standards and development best practice.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and guidance to internal teams to support long‑term capability development.

Essential Experience and Skills

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Significant experience designing and developing solutions using Microsoft Power BI.
  • Experience working with Dataverse, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform data sources to develop reporting and analytical solutions.
  • Strong experience creating data models and semantic layers to support reporting and analytics.
  • Advanced knowledge of DAX and experience developing complex calculations and measures.
  • Strong experience using Power Query and data transformation techniques.
  • Experience working with SQL and relational databases.
  • Understanding of data modelling principles, including star schemas, dimensions, fact tables and relationships.
  • Experience producing reporting solutions for a range of business audiences.
  • Strong understanding of dashboard design and data visualisation best practice.
  • Experience administering and supporting solutions within the Power BI Service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to understand complex business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with technical specialists, business users and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality outcomes within agreed timescales.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Experience of Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience of Azure data services and cloud-based analytics platforms.
  • Experience working with data warehouses, data lakes or modern data architectures.
  • Experience implementing reporting governance and data quality controls.
  • Experience developing API-based integrations and working with multiple data sources.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience supporting digital transformation, data or analytics programmes.
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications such as PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate.
  • Experience working within the UK public sector or a regulated environment.
