Role Overview
The Civil Power Engineer is responsible for the design, coordination, and delivery of civil engineering works associated with electrical infrastructure projects with substations.
The role requires the candidate to undertake design works for concrete and steel under the supervision of a Senior Engineer and coordinate designs between the different disciplines to ensure a compliant and cost effective design.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Technical Delivery
- Develop civil and structural designs for substation foundations, equipment bases, control buildings, cable trenches, access roads, drainage systems, retaining walls, bunds and compounds.
- Produce drawings, calculations, specifications, and construction details.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (BS/EN/Eurocodes, DNO/TSO specs, CDM, utility standards).
- Support electrical and mechanical teams with civil interfaces and integration requirements.
- Interpret geotechnical, topographical, and environmental reports and incorporate findings into designs.
- Project & Site Coordination
- Provide technical support during construction, including RFI responses, site inspections, and design clarifications.
- Assess contractor method statements, temporary works, and construction proposals.
- Support planning applications, environmental assessments, and permitting activities.
- Stakeholder Collaboration
- Coordinate with internal design teams, external consultants, clients, and contractors.
- Attend design reviews, hazard studies (HAZID/HAZCON), and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Prepare technical reports, design justifications, and documentation packages.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure civil designs meet CDM requirements and promote safe construction practices.
- Carry out design risk assessments and embed mitigations within the design.
- Ensure compliance with utility specifications, industry regulations, and environmental standards.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of civil and structural engineering principles.
- Experience with substation or power sector infrastructure (LV/HV/EHV).
- Proficient in design tools such as Auto CAD, Civil 3D, STAAD, Tekla or similar.
- Ability to interpret survey data, geotechnical reports, and utility drawings.
- Excellent communication and report‑writing skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering (BEng/MEng).
- Chartered or working toward chartership (CEng / IEng) with ICE or IStruct E (advantageous).
- Experience within the power, utilities, renewables, or heavy infrastructure sectors.
- Knowledge of DNO/TSO standards (e. g., National Grid, SSE, UKPN, SPEN, ENW) preferred.
- Experience with site work, design coordination, and construction support.
