We're currently recruiting a Laboratory Specialist to support material Science assessments for one of the largest Aerospace manufacturers in Europe. Based in a specialist manufacturing facility in Broughton, you will be responsible for conducting a wide range of hands-on laboratory testing to validate material properties, product integrity, and process compliance. This role involves chemical sample preparation analysis and auditing of special manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong theoretical background with a BSc or MSc in chemistry, practical laboratory experience, and a thorough understanding of industrial processes. This is a shift-based role with alternating weeks of morning and afternoon shifts Monday to Friday plus occasional night shifts. It is a full-time onsite role due to needing access to laboratory equipment and is an initial 12-month contract position. It's being offered on a pay rate of £29.49 per hour PAYE or £39.45 per hour Umbrella inside IR35, plus uplifted overtime rates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Chemical Analysis of surface treatment chemical & rinse tanks, effluent, sealant, paint & hydraulic fluids
- Lead trials for new products before they transition into use
- Perform and document a variety of chemical analysis including IC, ICP-OES, titrations (manual & automated), XRF, FTIR, Surface Tension, COD, surfactants and cloth analysis in accordance with AITM, ASTM, ISO, and other relevant standards.
- Analyse test data, generating comprehensive reports
- Perform precise sample preparation and dilutions for critical analytical analysis techniques including IC, ICP, XRF and various titration methods
- Support failure non-conformance by providing detailed chemical analysis using a variety of techniques
- As part of process Inspection and control, collaborate with production teams to troubleshoot process deviations and implement corrective actions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry or a closely related technical field. Alternatively Higher National Certificate in Chemistry or equivalent with industrial experience
- Theoretical knowledge of Ion Chromatography (IC) or similar, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy & various titration types
- Proven experience in a hands-on laboratory environment undertaking chemical analysis involving sample preparation and dilutions
- In-depth understanding of special processes, chemical surface treatments, and coating systems (paints)
- Ability to interpret technical specifications and industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, AMS).
- Proficient in technical report writing and data analysis.
This role is a shift-based role on early shift, late shift and night shift on a rota basis. Recognising the RESTRICTED nature of the work, suitable candidates will be BPSS cleared or eligible for this level of clearance before starting on site.
