Job Purpose Statement

The Application Consultant contributes to the development of the strategic OT Asset Information Management solution and is responsible for its implementation.

Working as a senior member of the programme delivery team, the Application Consultant will make Application design decisions that satisfy both local and Global requirements, ensuring that the Applications Analysts and 3rd party partners are familiar with the design decisions and that they have been ratified with the Transformation Architecture & Strategy team.

Leading a small team of Application Analysts and Application Administrators to deliver and support solutions within their Value Stream is a core part of the role.

A key part of the role is to create and maintain the models, templates and frameworks that will be used by the rest of the team in the implementation of the business requirements.

The post-holder will be responsible for working within the framework of OT/IT applications.

This role will be dedicated to the programme of delivery and will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Capture and review business requirements and suggest technical solutions
  • Assess solutions proposed by external partners to determine views on suitability or any potential issues
  • Identify & evaluate solution options to provide justification for chosen solution
  • Work with external partner to identify costs for solutions with review of comparative options / costs
  • Works with external partner to determine delivery time for solutions

Development of key elements of the SPEN Digitalisation Strategy.

Ensuring that all projects are consistent with Strategy and adhere to the Iberdrola Global model and Architecture direction.

Leadership

Providing clear application design direction to Delivery Teams.

Improving the knowledge of Applications Analysts and Application Administrators within their Value Stream through mentoring, workshops and other skill transfer methods.

Project Engagement

Early engagement on large projects and programmes Taking strategic direction from the Transformation Architecture & Strategy team and defining detailed Application Solutions for the business.

Assisting business in early scope definition, feasibility analysis and business case development.

Requirements Capture

Responsible for decomposition of large projects into discrete areas of application work packages.

Solutions Delivery

Responsible for supporting IT Strategy implementation through Application Design Roadmaps, upgrades, etc Accountable for ensuring the delivered solution meets business requirements.

Testing

Development of testing strategy for larger projects where long end-to-end business threads need to be tested spanning multiple underlying integrated systems.

Environment Knowledge

Knowledge and awareness of Iberdrola’s organisation, culture, people, strategy and operating models and implications for IT projects.

Experience in design, delivery and evaluation of IT requirements and development of appropriate Global and Local solutions working with the Transformation Architecture & Strategy Team and other UKIT Teams.

Proven ability to apply knowledge of businesses and sector to ensure OT/IT development projects are fit for purpose and support business goals/strategy.

Applications and Technology Knowledge

Responsible for investigating new Application solutions and working with External vendors to identify application technologies that meet the business goals/strategy.

Ensuring that application solution knowledge is kept up to date in selected areas of responsibility.

Financial Engagement

People Management Validation of all financial cost assumptions regarding the application solution. Responsible at a project level for alignment of projects with core IT strategy.

Responsible for managing a small team of Application Analysts and Application Administrators to deliver and support solutions within their Value Stream.

  • Responsibility for defining effective application designs on capital IT projects up to £5m.
  • Leads teams of internal resources (up to 5), supplemented by external contractors as required, with responsibility for the management and execution of Application solutions on behalf of SPEN.
  • Provides expert advice on a number of specific Application platforms to Transformation teams and projects.
  • Provides expert input to global/local definition of strategy, standards and procedures relating to specific Application areas.
  • Able to develop into detailed designs solutions identified by the Architecture & Strategy team.
  • Responsible for the oversight and management of 2L and 3L support partners ensuring quality of service and continuous service improvement.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Significant experience of Application development in an organisation of similar scope and scale to Scottish Power, with previous Solutions Application Design experience in a global organisation preferred.
  • Significant Service Now experience
  • Significant experience in working with external vendors to define application solutions.
  • Experience in collaborating with various external providers, to complete proof of concept exercises and run innovation projects.
  • Experience and understanding of Application challenges and solutions.
  • Highly developed problem solving and delivery skills with the ability to analyse complex issues, recommend appropriate solutions and manage projects to delivery these.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to distil technical issues into a form that can be digested by non-technical managers.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with key stakeholders locally and globally.
  • Previous experience of operating in a matrix management model and of managing a team comprising a combination of internal and external resources.
  • Experience of design modelling and document management tools.
  • Planning & Organising
  • Agree Application solution designs with business representatives and Solution Architecture leads.
  • Organises own and team (including external contractors) workload over a 12-month planning horizon, including objective setting and performance management.
  • Ensures the Applications solutions ongoing financial management during changing requirements/technical issues to ensure projects deliver to budget.
  • Recommends appropriate Application solutions for all responsible projects.
  • Internal and External Relationships
  • Solutions Architects to take solution architecture concepts into detailed application solutions.
  • Scottish Power IT Management Team to provide advice and recommendations on the Applications solutions selected.
  • Key business stakeholders to Director Level.
  • Business managers across Scottish Power throughout project deliveries.
  • Iberdrola’s Architecture & Technology teams in Spain and UK
  • Outsourced application partners and suppliers
  • Group IT Management Team.
  • Special Requirements (not mandatory)
  • The role operates as part of a global team and periodic travel to Spain and other company locations may be required.
  • Attendance at Conferences and external venues to ensure current knowledge of application landscape.
  • Minimum Criteria (mandatory)
  • 4+ years’ related work experience.
  • 4 years’ of progressive experience in software engineering/enterprise architecture/technology leadership across multiple products, systems and/or platforms.
  • 4 years’ working in Application solutions design delivering IT solutions.
  • 4 years of experience in Enterprise applications database, distributed computing, virtualization and/or application technology.
  • Experience in delivering industrial platforms or horizontal software middleware.
  • Knowledge of technologies and common Packaged Platform/Systems.
  • Bachelor’s Degree. In lieu of Bachelor’s degree, equivalent industry experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience of a Transmission business preferable
