About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Senior Process Design Engineer to join our Capital Delivery team. This is a key technical leadership role responsible for driving process excellence across a portfolio of water, wastewater, and sludge treatment projects from concept through to completion. You will play a critical role in ensuring the optimum process solutions are selected and developed, balancing whole-life cost, operational performance, low-carbon outcomes, and environmental compliance. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, operational stakeholders, regulators, and external specialists, you will lead process design activities through early project development and support successful project delivery. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead process design activities across a portfolio of capital projects from inception through delivery.
  • Evaluate and select optimal process solutions, considering operational risk, whole-life cost, carbon reduction, and environmental impact.
  • Provide technical leadership and governance for process engineering decisions.
  • Review and approve process design outputs produced by internal teams and external partners.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop and deliver robust treatment solutions.
  • Engage with operational teams, strategy functions, regulators, and environmental specialists to ensure alignment and compliance.
  • Support commissioning activities and contribute to process optimisation initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement through participation in technical communities of practice and R&D initiatives.
  • Contribute to updates of design standards, technical guidance, and best practice documentation.
  • Mentor and develop junior process engineers and wider technical teams.
  • Manage specialist contractors and suppliers where required, ensuring safe and effective project delivery.
  • Provide operational troubleshooting and technical support across treatment processes when needed.
  • Maintain awareness of industry developments and liaise with national and international technical experts to ensure adoption of leading-edge solutions.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring significant experience in water, wastewater, and sludge treatment process engineering, together with strong technical, commercial, and stakeholder management skills. You will demonstrate the ability to influence decision-making, solve complex engineering challenges, and communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.

Essential

  • Significant experience in water, wastewater, and sludge treatment process engineering.
  • Strong understanding of process design and commissioning principles.
  • Proven experience leading technical process design activities on complex infrastructure projects.
  • Commercial awareness with an understanding of whole-life cost principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience using process modelling tools, spreadsheets, and technical reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles and regulatory frameworks relevant to capital programmes.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers and technical teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and manage competing priorities.

Desirable

  • Experience contributing to innovation, research, or process optimisation programmes.
  • Membership of relevant industry technical groups or communities of practice.
  • Exposure to low-carbon or sustainability-focused engineering solutions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree qualified in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (e.g. IChemE or equivalent).
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Full membership of a recognised professional institution such as Institution of Chemical Engineers or Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
  • Postgraduate qualification in a specialist water or wastewater treatment discipline.
