TECHNICAL PROJECT MANAGER in Scotland

TECHNICAL PROJECT MANAGER in Scotland

Scotland Full-Time On-site
M

ROLE

The Technical Project manager will establish the delivery management function, introducing the processes, governance and reporting required to coordinate multiple technical workstreams, programmes and customer-funded projects. Working closely with the COO and engineering leadership, you will provide the structure and visibility needed to scale delivery across the organization. As the company grows, there is opportunity for the role to grow with it.

What you will own

  • Portfolio delivery management - overseeing multiple concurrent technical projects and workstreams, balancing priorities, managing dependencies, and ensuring leadership has a clear view of delivery status, risks, resource demands and upcoming milestones across the portfolio.
  • Bid and costing support - working with the COO over the coming weeks to pull together robust costing and resourcing for the PANOPTES proposal, under real time pressure.

  • Programme and project planning - building and maintaining integrated schedules across multiple programmes, projects and engineering workstreams; managing dependencies, critical paths and delivery milestones to ensure alignment with company objectives.

  • Budgets and resources - tracking spend against forecast, supporting budget development with the COO, and planning the people, equipment and facilities required across projects and programmes at each stage.

  • Risk and issues - owning the risk and issue register, chasing actions and escalating what needs attention.

  • Reporting rhythm - running the reporting cadence for TX leadership and, where required, funders and Group.

  • Trials and gate review coordination - helping plan and coordinate trials and stage-gate reviews, making sure the right evidence and people are in place on time - the technical content and judgement sit with the interim technical lead, the thematic leads and system architect.

  • Technical coordination and integration - working closely with engineers, technical leads, architects and external partners to coordinate complex technical activities, manage dependencies between teams, and ensure delivery plans reflect technical realities and integration requirements.

What we are looking for

An experienced Technical Project Manager who has delivered complex engineering, technology or defence programmes and is comfortable operating in a fast-growing organisation where priorities evolve rapidly. You will be able to engage credibly with engineers and technical subject matter experts, understand technical dependencies and delivery risks, and convert complex technical work into robust plans, forecasts and reporting. Defence experience is valuable but not essential; strong technical project delivery capability is the core requirement. Low ego, high ownership, and the confidence to tell leadership what they need to hear.

Essential

  • APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or an equivalent recognised professional project management qualification.
  • Demonstrable proven ability managing multiple concurrent technical or engineering projects and programmes, with responsibility for schedule, budget, resource planning and risk management.
  • Ability to work closely with engineering, software, systems or product development teams and managing technically complex delivery activities.
  • Ability to understand technical concepts sufficiently to identify delivery risks, dependencies and challenges of integration, while relying on technical specialists for detailed engineering judgement.

  • Has established project governance, reporting and delivery processes within a growing organisation or programme environment.
  • Has developed or supported bid costings and budgets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including reporting to senior stakeholders and funders.

  • Confidence with Microsoft 365 (Project, Excel, Teams, SharePoint) or equivalent.

  • Ability to handle sensitive commercial and technical information with discretion.

Desirable

  • Managing portfolios of projects rather than a single programme.
  • Supporting product development from concept through demonstration, testing and operational deployment.
  • Familiarity with stage-gate processes and trials coordination.

  • Familiar with UK MOD, DASA, DSTL or similar funding bodies.
