Overview

As Principal Engineer, you will lead a Design Authority team for Control & Instrumentation, ensuring high technical standards and consistent design.

You’ll guide delivery across the discipline, mentor engineers, and collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders to meet safety, regulatory and quality requirements.

The role focuses on developing standardised plant technologies and proactive safety culture, with opportunities to shape the design direction and future readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide line management and leadership to a Design Authority engineering team (6–10 reports)
  • Maintain high team performance aligned with Urenco values and collaboration
  • Ensure plant design consistency by updating and applying Urenco standards and specifications
  • Foster proactive safety culture and learning-from-experience behaviours
  • Allocate engineering resources with Group Design Authority Manager and Design Managers
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to develop SQEP training and development programmes
  • Anticipate future design needs and emerging challenges to prepare the team
  • Support Design Authority objectives and manage the associated budget
  • Define and develop standardised plant technologies using best practice to stay competitive
  • Key requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Control & Instrumentation Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent international licence
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams delivering or assuring design for medium‑ to large‑scale plant systems
  • Demonstrated leadership in complex design and engineering projects with governance
  • Experience guiding a team of highly skilled experts ensuring high technical quality
  • Track record delivering complex design packages with regulatory, safety and quality compliance
  • Strong ability to manage standards and specifications for new and existing systems
  • Senior experience in defining design solutions to support integrated safety analysis and safety‑in‑design
