Overview
In this Health and Safety Manager role, you will lead and shape the safety culture within a Portsmouth-based manufacturing operation. You will ensure compliance with H&S legislation, maintain the ISO 14001 environmental system, and drive continuous improvement across departments. You will prepare and manage audits, risk assessments, RAMS, and regulatory reporting, acting as the primary link with regulators. This position offers a hands-on, impact-driven chance to steady safety performance and develop a high-performing H&S team.
Responsibilities
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of H&S legislation and developments affecting operations
- Ensure policies and procedures are interpreted, documented, and maintained for compliance
- Oversee H&S assessments (risk, COSHH, DSEAR) and regulatory compliance
- Support and maintain the Environmental Management System (BS EN ISO 14001) and participate in surveillance audits
- Inform and train staff on H&S duties and responsibilities across the organisation
- Advise, coach, and support managers to implement environmental (PA02) and safety (PA03) systems
- Lead H&S inspections/audits, report non-compliances, and drive corrective actions
- Act as primary contact for HSE, Environment Agency, Fire Authorities, and other bodies
- Coordinate with HR on first aid and training requirements
- Assist in and review RAMS, safe working procedures, and environmental registers
- Lead health and safety committee meetings with employee representatives
- Ensure compliance areas (fire, emergency response, asbestos) with managers
- Lead H&S audits to maintain effective, updated systems
- Conduct induction and ongoing compliance training for staff
- Investigate accidents with timely reporting and corrective actions
- Ensure REACH compliance and annual air emissions testing
- Identify training or certification needs to meet legislation and guidance
- Measure H&S performance and report results to the business
- Lead and develop the H&S department and foster continuous improvement
- Manage the Asbestos Register and maintain a clean, compliant workspace
- Identify personal development and training needs with management
- Participate in appraisals and probation reviews as directed by HR
- Pursue career progression through skill and knowledge development
- Complete mandatory training and assist the Director with other duties
- Duties as directed by Technical & Compliance Director
