Overview
Payroll Officer β Up to Β£45k base salary. Hybrid working β 4 days on site 1 from home (37.5 hours per week β core hours 9:30 β 2:15pm).
The Role
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Payroll Officer to take ownership of the company\βs payroll operations. This is a stand-alone role within the HR/Finance function, working closely with the Head of HR and wider business to ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll delivery.
This position will suit someone who thrives in a hands-on environment, enjoys improving processes, and has experience with both manual and automated payroll systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end payroll process (monthly cycle) for c. 491 employees.
- Ensure compliance with HMRC legislation, tax, NI, and pension requirements.
- Oversee onboarding payroll set-up and leaver processing.
- Maintain and improve payroll policies, procedures, and process documentation.
- Administer and reconcile payroll journals and timesheets.
- Collaborate with HR and Finance on audits, reporting, and payroll queries.
- Act as point of contact for payroll-related queries and explain payslips/benefits to employees.
- Conduct audit checks and liaise with external payroll providers where required.
- Support implementation and improvement of payroll systems (SAP HR/Finance, Time & Attendance).
- Drive automation and process mapping to reduce manual processes.
- Ensure compliance with security requirements (BPSS and SC clearance where applicable).
Experience & Skills
- Proven experience as a Payroll Officer
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, including tax year end, pensions, NI, and HMRC reporting.
- Demonstrated experience moving payroll from manual to automated systems.
- Hands-on experience with payroll systems (SAP HR/Finance desirable).
- Strong numerical and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain payroll/benefits clearly.
- Experience managing payroll audits and compliance checks.
- Ability to work independently in a stand-alone role while engaging with stakeholders across HR, Finance, and Operations.
