Quantity Surveyor

Location: Manchester/hybrid, with site attendance dependent on project
Hours: 36.5 hours per week, including an early Friday finish
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Working-away package: £28,800 annual allowance, + car scheme plus a 15% salary uplift on qualifying assignments

The opportunity

Morson Talent is working exclusively with a specialist UK engineering and delivery business to recruit Quantity Surveyors for major infrastructure, energy and engineering projects.

This is an opportunity to join an established organisation with more than 150 years of engineering heritage and a track record of contributing to some of the UK’s most demanding safety-critical programmes. Current opportunities include flagship projects such as Hinkley Point C, Sizewell and HS2.

You do not need to arrive with extensive NEC experience. Applications are welcomed from capable Quantity Surveyors with a strong JCT background who want to develop their NEC contract-management capability. The business will provide the training and project exposure required to make that transition.

The role offers a 36.5-hour working week, an early finish on Fridays and flexibility around hybrid working from the company’s Bury office. Certain assignments require three nights away each week and attract an additional £28,800 annual allowance plus a 15% uplift on base salary.

The role

As Quantity Surveyor, you will take front-line commercial responsibility for assigned projects from mobilisation through to final account.

Working alongside Project Managers, commercial leadership, operational teams and manufacturing colleagues, you will control project costs, manage contractual change, protect commercial entitlements and provide accurate reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

Because the business combines engineering, off-site manufacturing and site installation, you will gain exposure to both factory-originated and construction-delivery costs.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain project budgets, monthly forecasts, cost reports and margin projections.
  • Measure completed works against drawings, specifications and agreed scope.
  • Prepare accurate and timely applications for payment.
  • Identify, record, price and recover variations and contractual change.
  • Administer NEC early warnings and compensation events, including submissions through CEMAR.
  • Ensure commercial records provide clear evidence and full auditability.
  • Monitor project programmes and identify delay or change-related entitlements.
  • Manage subcontractor procurement, valuations, payments and final accounts.
  • Track manufacturing, material, labour and installation costs within the project P&L.
  • Maintain positive commercial relationships with clients, contractors and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and agree appropriate actions with project leadership.
  • Prepare, submit and negotiate final accounts.
  • Support and develop Assistant Quantity Surveyors where applicable.

About you

You will have Quantity Surveying experience within construction, mechanical engineering, HVAC, building services, infrastructure or another project-delivery environment.

You should also bring:

  • Experience administering JCT or NEC contracts.
  • Strong measurement, valuation and cost-management capability.
  • Confidence interpreting drawings, specifications and project information.
  • Experience preparing forecasts, reports and variance analysis.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to identify contractual entitlement.
  • Strong client-facing communication and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping discipline.
  • Confidence using spreadsheets and commercial reporting systems.

Quantity Surveyors with strong JCT experience who want to develop into NEC delivery are actively encouraged to apply.

Desirable experience

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
  • RICS, CIOB or ICES membership, or progress towards professional qualification.
  • Experience using CEMAR.
  • Nuclear, defence, rail or other safety-critical project experience.
  • Mechanical, HVAC or specialist building-services experience.
  • Manufacturing or off-site production exposure.
  • Experience working on major client-led infrastructure programmes.
  • BIM or digital project-management systems experience.

Why join?

Work on nationally significant projects including Hinkley Point C, Sizewell and HS2.

Receive structured support to develop from JCT into NEC contracting.

Join a well-established specialist engineering business with substantial international backing.

Gain exposure to engineering, manufacturing and site installation.

Benefit from a 36.5-hour working week and early Friday finish.

Access flexible hybrid working around the Manchester office and project requirements.

Receive an exceptional working-away package on qualifying assignments: £28,800 per annum plus a 15% salary uplift.

Develop within a business operating across energy, decommissioning, defence, transport and advanced facilities.
