Join a leading banking organisation at an exciting time of significant transformation, where technology, innovation and continuous improvement are shaping the future of its IT landscape. As an RPG Developer, you will play a key role in evolving and maintaining critical IBMi applications, helping to deliver robust, secure and efficient solutions that support essential banking operations.

This is an opportunity to combine your technical expertise with meaningful project work, modernising existing applications, developing new functionality and ensuring systems remain reliable, scalable and fit for the future.

Working closely with business stakeholders, solution architects and fellow IT professionals, you will:

  • Translate business requirements into effective technical solutions
  • Document user stories
  • Contribute to the design, development and delivery of new features
  • Write clean, maintainable and testable code in line with established development standards
  • Troubleshoot complex issues
  • Investigate application behaviour and identify opportunities to improve performance and reliability
  • Contribute to technical documentation, user guides, training materials and stakeholder demonstrations

You will also support the ongoing development and maintenance of critical banking applications, including providing out-of-hours support when required.

We’re looking for an experienced RPG Developer with strong knowledge of the IBMi operating system and a passion for understanding how systems work beneath the surface. You will have hands-on experience developing applications using IBM Rational Developer, with a thorough understanding of both fixed-format and free-format RPG, alongside strong SQL skills, including writing, embedding and optimising queries for performance and maintainability.

Experience with modern RPG development techniques, including modules, service programs and activation groups, as well as application design and established software engineering principles, will be important. You will bring a solid understanding of IBMi security and authorities, subsystems, system APIs, SQL services, journaling and recovery processes, together with the ability to investigate complex technical issues using job logs, journals and operating system logs.

Experience with performance tuning and tools such as Visual Explain would be beneficial, as would familiarity with the relevant banking applications and IBMi platform administration. Knowledge of Citrix server administration and vulnerability management would also be an advantage.

Beyond your technical expertise, you will be a collaborative problem-solver who enjoys working with others, communicating complex information clearly and taking ownership of delivering high-quality solutions. You will be comfortable working within an Agile environment, managing priorities and deadlines, and engaging with both technical and business stakeholders.

Curiosity, attention to detail and a desire to continually learn and improve will help you thrive in this role, particularly as the organisation progresses through its transformation programme. If you enjoy working on business-critical systems, tackling challenging technical problems and making a tangible contribution to the evolution of banking technology, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
