An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Financial Controller to join a growing infrastructure business. This is a broad leadership role offering the chance to take ownership of financial control, commercial reporting and project accounting while partnering closely with operational leaders to support business performance.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you’ll lead a small finance team and play a key role in ensuring robust financial governance, accurate reporting and strong commercial decision making across a portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities of the Financial Controller:
- Lead the month-end and year-end close process, delivering accurate management accounts and high-quality financial reporting.
- Take ownership of the balance sheet, profit and loss account and overall financial integrity of the business.
- Produce meaningful management information, dashboards and KPI reporting to support operational and strategic decision making.
- Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.
- Partner with senior stakeholders to provide commercial insight, challenge and recommendations that improve financial performance.
- Take full financial responsibility for a portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects.
- Oversee project reporting, including work in progress, revenue recognition, accrued income, project margins and profitability.
- Review and challenge project budgets, forecasts and Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs) to ensure financial accuracy and commercial robustness.
- Monitor project performance, identifying financial risks and opportunities while supporting project teams to improve outcomes.
- Manage project cash flow forecasting, working capital and debt management activities.
- Maintain a strong financial control environment, ensuring compliance with company policies, accounting standards and governance requirements.
- Support statutory reporting, audit activities and continuous improvement initiatives across finance processes and systems.
- Lead, develop and mentor a small finance team, promoting high performance, accountability and continuous improvement.
Candidate Profile:
- Qualified accountant, ACCA, ACA or CIMA.
- Previous experience as a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or Senior Finance Business Partner within a construction, engineering, infrastructure or project-based environment.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge with experience of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and balance sheet ownership.
- Experience managing project accounting, including work in progress, CVRs, revenue recognition and project profitability.
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to influence operational stakeholders and support business decision making.
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience using Sage 50 or similar accounting systems.
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
