Overview

As a Principal Firmware (FPGA) Engineer, you will own FPGA-based firmware design for high-performance, mission-critical systems across defence and aerospace.

You’ll work with a cross-functional team to deliver integrated FPGA solutions from requirements through validation, contributing to safe, reliable products.

The role combines hands-on design with architecture decisions and process improvement, in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop FPGA firmware using VHDL, Verilog or System Verilog
  • Lead or contribute to firmware architecture and design decisions
  • Verify and validate firmware with simulation and testbenches
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware and software engineers to deliver integrated solutions
  • Support requirements definition, design reviews, and technical decision-making
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of firmware processes (automation, scripting, documentation)
  • Utilize industry-standard FPGA and So C development tools
  • Support integration activities, including on-site work at customer or test sites
  • Deliver work to agreed time, cost, and quality standards
  • Key requirements
  • Strong experience developing firmware for FPGA-based systems
  • Expertise in VHDL, Verilog, or System Verilog
  • Experience with simulation/verification tools (Model Sim, Questa Sim)
  • Solid understanding of digital design and hardware/software integration
  • Ability to contribute to or lead design and architecture activities
  • Strong communication skills in multidisciplinary teams
  • Eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance
