UK Water Company is seeking a Laboratory Scientist to join our Water Quality and Environment team on a temp-to-perm basis. This opportunity will initially be offered as a 12-week temporary assignment, after which successful candidates will be offered a permanent contract. This is an excellent opportunity for a scientifically qualified individual looking to develop their career within a highly regulated laboratory environment. Full training will be provided.

As a Laboratory Scientist, you will assist with the analysis of high-volume and complex laboratory workstreams, ensuring samples are tested accurately, within required deadlines, and to the highest standards of water quality testing to help protect public health.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse water quality samples in accordance with laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Use the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to accurately record and report results.
  • Identify, investigate and interpret atypical results, escalating issues where appropriate.
  • Prioritise and organise daily workloads to ensure sample stability and testing deadlines are achieved.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and operational requirements.
  • Safely operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation following comprehensive training.
  • Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, calibration and quality control checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Investigate and help resolve equipment issues to maintain efficient laboratory operations.
  • Follow all documented procedures, processes and methods within the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Comply with ISO 17025 requirements and relevant regulatory standards.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety, including COSHH compliance and dynamic risk assessments.
Candidate Requirements
  • Hold a degree qualification in a relevant scientific discipline such as Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or a related subject.
  • Be able to work the fixed shift pattern of Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9:00am – 6:45pm.
  • Successfully pass a colour blindness assessment as part of the recruitment process.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Be comfortable working within a regulated laboratory environment.
Desirable
  • Previous laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of water quality testing or environmental laboratories.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Training & Development

Full training will be provided to ensure successful candidates are fully competent in laboratory procedures, equipment operation, quality systems and health & safety requirements.

Important Information

Following successful completion of the initial 12-week temporary period, candidates will be offered a permanent contract. Once employed on a permanent basis, you will be required to participate in a compulsory standby rota, which will include out-of-hours and emergency response work as required by operational needs.
