Job: Construction Planning Engineer
Location: Bridgwater, Somerset - 3 days on site + 2 days from home
Status: Contract until Dec 2026 with strong extension possibility – Good Daily Rate - Inside IR35

Morson Edge are working on behalf of a major player in the Energy Sector who have a current contract requirement for experienced Construction Planning Engineers proficient in the use of P6 and possessing proven experience working in support of highly complex regulated industry construction projects to join their established site-based team in Bridgwater, Somerset (TA5 1UD) supporting their £multi-bn mega construction project. This is a (renewable) contract position - inside IR35.
This role will be based at the client’s project site near Bridgwater, Somerset (TA5 1UD) 3 days / week with the rest worked from home.
Job Purpose / Overview
The construction planner will support the area management team develop and progress a detailed short term schedule which integrates and visually demonstrates the works of multiple suppliers. The level 5 schedule reflects interfaces and scopes of tier 1 partners to ensure they are fully integrated.
Principal Accountabilities
The Construction Planner is part of the PMO planning function working in the area management team to support the construction phase. Accountable to the Area Lead planner, the Construction Planner will be responsible for the onsite short term planning of installation activities and associated activities, this will include the governance, management and updating of construction schedules to integrating all tier1 contracts.
The Construction Planner will be responsible for the following (not exhaustive) specific accountabilities:
- The development, integrations, design, testing & commissioning of detailed construction schedules within the MEH phase
- Considering all aspects of construction planning for works on the project. This will involve conducting integrated schedule reviews to develop detailed, optimised construction delivery sequences and support construction teams to de-clash planned activities from multiple contractors
- Integration of construction works activities with all HPC programmes to optimise the planning process. The role will be instrumental in addressing interfaces within buildings to support the construction management teams co-ordinate contractors on site. The construction schedules support the overall project integrated works schedule (IWS) and the 16-week look ahead process to un-constrain work and deliver schedule adherence.
- The management and update of the schedule data within the planning and production control toolsets
- Support for the performance optimisation / influence of the 4D capability on the performance of Safety, Quality, Cost, Time & Risk across the life-cycle delivery of the construction works
- Ensure that construction schedule is supported by the relevant digital tool sets and data to ensure that its performance always meets the needs of the delivery of the project’s works
- Ensuring that construction schedules are produced, managed, and maintained in accordance with the planning procedures and requirements.
- Reporting of site progress using various methods, and ensuring that multiple stakeholders are informed of the relevant schedule data.
Key Deliverables
- Advocating safe and effective planning of works for site construction.
- Ensuring that conventional and nuclear safety considerations are recognised as essential to the success of the project and built into the planning processes.
- Developing detailed plans to a facility and/or area basis which integrate, co-ordinate and sequence work activities to achieve the optimum construction sequence paying particular attention to contractor interfaces at site within the 16 week horizon.
- Communicate schedule resource requirements, durations, and associated quantity information to the construction leads
- Support the project periodic look ahead process with the rolling extract of an integrated schedule
- Identifying planning scope, major constraints, and contract requirements
- Identifying quantities and factors affecting the programme
- Establishing and agreeing with Operations construction outputs and agree working hours
- Develop resource, material, and quantities profiles from the level 5 schedule to support delivery readiness, particularly bulk MEH material and equipment delivery needs
- Develop schedule metrics and reporting to allow measurement of schedule adherence and planned/actual schedule performance.
- Work with the 4D team utilising animated schedule sequences and enhance the 4D/2D tools and capability on the project, particularly for construction coordination purposes to present the schedule
- Work with the construction teams and the PMO to develop visual management capabilities for deployment in the field by the construction and contract partner teams
- Encouraging the development of lessons learned to support future project execution.
Knowledge and Skills
The Construction Planner will have knowledge of Engineering, Procurement and Construction activities and the integration of these activities. In addition, they will possess an understanding of project planning processes and the ability to identify and resolve complex interfaces. The construction Planner will have the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders in a construction environment. Strong communication skills and commercial awareness are essential. Specific knowledge, skills, qualification, and experience include:
- In-depth knowledge and experience of programme progress and forecast position and planning.
- Strong communication skills
- An understanding of various methods of planning, programming and progress monitoring
- An understanding of the construction market, methods of construction, plant, equipment and labour requirements
- A basic understanding of estimating principles
- Understanding of NEC Alliance contract and other contract forms would be useful but not essential
Qualifications & Experience
- A construction trade or OND/HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Equivalent in Construction Management or related subject is desirable, as is Professional membership of one or more of the following: RICS/CIOB/RIBA/ICE/CIBSE, or a demonstrable level of experience based on previous project assignments.
- Demonstrable experience integrating construction activities within a short-term planning horizon
- Experience in delivering construction within highly complex projects in regulated environments
- Strong communication skills in English required, knowledge of French can be an advantage.
- 4D planning experience would be useful
