Knowledge and skills required:
- Knowledge of electronic design software packages for simulation, schematic and layout design - Altium would be advantageous
- Knowledge of the following would be advantageous: Microcontrollers, Microprocessors, FPGAs, Digital Circuit Design, Mixed Signal and Analogue Circuit Design, Analogue low-noise interface circuitry, RF, ADC, Power Amplifier and Pre-Amp design
- Able to translate customer requirements into an electronics specification and create feasible preliminary architectures from the electronics specifications
- Able to carry out detailed design and implementation of electronic circuits
- Derive verification plans to address design requirements
- Prepare test procedures and traceability of these results back to the original requirements
- Produce accurate written documentation to fully support the design
- Able to provide advice on procedures and documentation for installation and trials
- Good knowledge of appropriate drawing and defence standards
- Good understanding of Design Assurance as defined in electrical / electronic design processes
- Knowledge of design for EMC and electrical safety
- Assessing products and applying applicable CE marking directives and harmonised standards, product assessment to the standards, and compilation of all evidence and documentation required for the Technical Construction File
- Investigating and solving complex problems with sub-contractors, suppliers and customers
- Maintain a design data pack, making sure that the item can be made again reliably and that it will perform consistently within the user requirement specification
- Producing details of specifications and outline designs
- Producing test plans and procedures
- Recommending modifications in the light of prototype test results
Challenges:
- Delivering high quality, innovative designs, using the most appropriate technologies available
- Use engineering principles to provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products
- Work on a project from conceptual design stage to final commissioning of the new system within the terms of the local Engineering Design Procedures and within the stated parameters of the work package agreement
- Proven ability to design and implement cost-effective equipment / modifications while considering technical, cost, safety and time constraints
Key accountabilities may include:
- Accountable to senior engineers, project managers and technical managers as appropriate
- Application of Design Engineering Procedures
- Assessment of product to the relevant CE marking directives
- Production of designs, calculations and associated drawings and documentation
- Ensuring that the requirements of the customer are known and understood, obtaining feedback on the extent to which customers' expectations are being met, ensuring the customers expectations are being managed in the event of unforeseen problems and delays
- Estimating work package agreements, and managing the completion of work to time, resource and cost requirements
- Progressing design tasks through the design phase to meet project requirements
- Attendance at meetings throughout each project
- Mentoring Junior Engineers
- Support to trials, including work on surface vessels and submarines
- Support to Test & Acceptance Department and Production where necessary
- Be responsible for the delivery of Electronics and Sub-System designs
