We are recruiting on behalf of a leading organisation within the Rail Rolling Stock industry for an experienced Team Leader to join their maintenance operation based at their Allerton Liverpool site. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong and motivated individual to lead a team of technicians responsible for maintaining a modern passenger train fleet. The successful candidate will combine hands-on technical expertise with strong leadership skills to ensure fleet reliability, safety and availability targets are achieved.

Role Overview

The Team Leader will be responsible for supervising and supporting a team of technicians carrying out maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair activities on rolling stock. The role requires extensive technical knowledge of on-board train systems, with a strong emphasis on fault finding, root cause analysis and providing technical guidance to maintenance teams. Working closely with depot management, engineering teams and customers, the Team Leader will play a critical role in ensuring maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise and support a team of technicians carrying out maintenance and repair activities on rolling stock.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on fault diagnosis and rectification across all train systems.
  • Carry out fault finding and root cause analysis on electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Utilise schematics, diagnostic software, test equipment and technical documentation to identify and resolve faults.
  • Plan, organise and coordinate warranty repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Liaise with customers and stakeholders to ensure fleet availability and reliability targets are achieved.
  • Monitor work quality, productivity and compliance with safety and engineering standards.
  • Prioritise maintenance activities according to safety, operational impact and fleet performance requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance fleet reliability and maintenance efficiency.
  • Ensure all maintenance records and documentation are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company procedures and industry regulations.
  • Monitor technician competence and conduct competency assessments, coaching and development activities.
  • Participate in shift handovers, technical briefings and operational meetings.

  • Large Diesel Engines and Transmissions
  • High-Pressure Pneumatic Systems
  • Electrical Wiring and Integration Systems
  • Associated Mechanical and Electrical Equipment

Essential Qualifications

NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant Electrical or Mechanical Engineering discipline.

Essential Experience

  • Substantial post-qualification engineering experience.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic experience within a technical engineering environment.
  • Experience using schematics, test and measurement equipment and diagnostic software.
  • Ability to interpret electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematic diagrams.
  • Proven experience providing technical support, guidance and mentoring to engineering teams.
  • Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including days, nights and weekends.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience within the rail rolling stock industry.
  • Candidates from automotive, aerospace, defence, heavy engineering or other safety-critical industries will also be considered.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Experience managing maintenance activities in a depot, workshop or operational environment.
  • Competency assessment and staff development experience.
