We are looking to recruit Seasonal Waterway Operatives / Bridge Operators for the Gloucester Sharpness Canal. The duties include:

  • Manually operating hand-wound bridges to allow safe passage of boats through and then closing up behind them.
  • Daily checks on the bridge to ensure safe operation.
  • Communicating via phone between bridges as part of a wider team.
  • This is considered a manual labour job, but I have volunteers in their 70s doing it, so it's not hard work.
  • Full training is given and typically candidates are trained/assessed within a matter of days.
  • Full PPE provided.
  • Good customer experience required as they'll be customer facing.
  • Hours per day are 8am-6pm and you would be expected to infill the rota, so likely 3-5 days a week.
  • No set lunch/break times but there's usually plenty of time during shifts for meals and breaks.
  • Looking for immediate start and the season runs until 31st October.
