The Senior Commercial Officer will support the Senior Commercial Manager within the Simulation and Training business area, part of the wider Maritime & Land Defence Solutions commercial function.
You will manage and deliver a portfolio of contracts and bids across a range of domestic customers in a fast-paced and dynamic defence environment. The role sits within a collaborative Commercial team of professionals at various levels, contributing to both opportunity growth and risk management. Key Responsibilities- Support the Commercial team across a range of contracts, projects, and campaigns
- Act as a customer-facing representative, managing queries and building strong, enduring relationships
- Participate in bid teams to develop bid and contract materials, including commercial reviews and governance approvals
- Collaborate with project teams, business development, and customers to support contract delivery and identify new opportunities
- Develop and implement commercial strategies covering:
- Contract development
- Pricing strategy
- Governance and compliance
- Customer negotiation
- Commercial risk management
- Margin improvement opportunities
- Review, negotiate, and obtain approval for contract terms and conditions, engaging Legal, Tax, Intellectual Property, and other central functions as required
- Lead negotiations for proposals of varying complexity, ensuring commercially sound agreements aligned with business objectives
- Work closely with Supply Chain to ensure appropriate flow-down of contractual obligations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external customers
- Previous experience within a commercial function
- Strong understanding of commercial principles, practices, and techniques
- Experience in defence sector environments, including awareness of international competitors and partners
- Minimum 3+ years' commercial experience, ideally within UK and export defence environments
- Experience working in highly collaborative team settings
- Strong customer focus with ability to meet deadlines and targets
- Good understanding of contract law, terms, and commercial frameworks
- Ability to identify and manage contractual and commercial risks
