BAE Systems Portsmouth - Design Engineer Mechanical/Piping 12 month contract, 5 days onsite per week. £30.18 per hour Umbrella - inside IR35.
Role Description: To undertake a defined range of detail design activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements of Mechanical/Piping design package and reports for Installation solutions on Legacy Warships, supplying advice and support to operations and other functions and/or to organise and co-ordinate aspects of detail design activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.
Core Duties:
- Support the development of best practice to increase the capability, performance of tools and processes.
- Support the developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
- Identify training requirements, skills gaps and development requirements of own discipline.
- Undertake task verification/checking of other Design Engineer’s work as directed by Principal Engineering Manager.
- Lead and conduct ship trials, surveys and engineering support activities.
- Undertake estimating of mechanical elements of the tasks.
- Produce and develop complex designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carry out detail design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained, taking due cognisance of design for production.
- Carry out investigations into operational problems or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a design team.

- Keep up to date in relevant technical areas, develop skills and capabilities to be able to provide more effective services, seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices, and supply technical support and expertise to others as required.
- Provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.
- Manage assigned budgets and lead, develop and motivate assigned employees to ensure they are aware of and capable of delivering their accountabilities.
- Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
- Compile accurate estimates.
- Compile statements of Works (SOWs) on behalf of customer when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:
- Possesses in-depth knowledge and design experience of all aspects within Mechanical/Piping Discipline using AutoCAD/Inventor.
- Able to perform robust analysis using recognised draughting and analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.
- Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting responses in assigned areas to operational units or other activities.
- Requires an understanding of how activities of own team interrelate and interact with other functional areas aligned to the same contract or project.
- Understands in detail the technical specification aligned to the functional area of activity.
- A full understanding of the external environment including the MoD structure and their engineering processes.
- Can apply the relevant Business processes to developing their outputs.
Skills:
- Requires very strong communication, diplomacy and interpersonal skills.
- Is required to influence, guide and convince others to adopt a particular course of action.
- Required to exchange complex engineering design information at Design Reviews.
- An understanding of detailed system and technical engineering drawings including manufacturing drawings with knowledge of projection layouts, scaling & tolerancing.
- Knowledge of ship system engineering drawings such as diagrammatic, piping isometrics and also ship systems materials and equipment (symbols).
- Knowledge of maritime warship/commercial systems i.e. fluid based systems, Mechanical systems.
- Understanding of naval ships commercial mechanical/piping systems for various classes of vessel.
Qualifications: Min HND/HNC Qualification in Mechanical /Piping Discipline or extensive industrial experience.
