Location: Manchester, 3 days office, 2 days remote each week

Hourly rate: £14.36 - £15.39 per hour DOE

Duration: 3-6 month contract initially, possibility for the role to become permanent

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Payroll Officer to join a busy organisation operating across the utilities and construction sectors. This role will support payroll operations during a key period of change and systems development. The successful candidate will have knowledge of end-to-end payroll processing, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work within a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities of the Payroll Officer

  • Process weekly and fortnightly payrolls for both site-based and office employees
  • Support the implementation of new payroll systems, including testing, data migration, and user training
  • Work closely with finance and IT teams to improve payroll processes and reporting
  • Prepare and submit P11D forms in line with HMRC requirements
  • Support year-end payroll activities, reconciliations, audits, and statutory reporting
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation for compliance and audit purposes
  • Produce payroll reports and analysis for finance and operational teams
  • Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation and industry-specific payroll practices
  • Liaise with HR, finance, and operational managers during project mobilisation and demobilisation phases

Skills and Experience Required

  • Previous payroll experience within a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
  • Experience using payroll systems such as ADP, PeopleHub, Sage, or similar
  • Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with HR and finance systems
  • Strong communication skills with a proactive approach to problem solving

Desirable Experience

  • Experience managing payroll across multiple sites or projects
  • Knowledge of CIS and contractor compliance within construction environments
