We are recruiting on behalf of a leading rail rolling stock organisation that plays a key role in delivering safe, reliable and efficient passenger services across the UK rail network. Due to continued growth and investment, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Maintenance Engineer to join their engineering team based in Chester.
Role Summary
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for developing, optimising and assuring fleet maintenance strategies to deliver safe, reliable and cost-effective rolling stock performance. This role supports maintenance planning, maintenance execution, overhaul programmes, asset management, reliability improvement and technical governance activities, ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory and OEM requirements. Working closely with Operations, Planning, Engineering and external stakeholders, the successful candidate will drive continuous improvement initiatives to maximise fleet availability, safety and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review and optimise maintenance strategies and maintenance schedules for rolling stock fleets.
- Support the planning and delivery of overhaul, modification and life-extension programmes.
- Analyse fleet performance data and identify opportunities to improve reliability, availability and maintainability.
- Lead and support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Monitor maintenance effectiveness and ensure maintenance activities are executed in accordance with approved procedures and standards.
- Manage engineering changes and ensure technical documentation is maintained and controlled effectively.
- Support maintenance assurance activities, audits and compliance reviews.
- Work collaboratively with Operations, Planning, Engineering teams and external suppliers to improve fleet performance.
- Produce technical reports, maintenance performance metrics and recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, industry standards, regulatory requirements and OEM specifications.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, efficiency and cost reduction.
Essential Qualifications
- Level 6 Engineering Degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline. Candidates with lower qualifications may be considered where supported by exceptionally strong and relevant industry experience.
Essential Experience
- Proven experience in a Maintenance Engineering role within rolling stock, railway, or other safety-critical asset-intensive industries.
- Experience developing, implementing and optimising maintenance strategies, maintenance programmes and overhaul activities.
- Strong background in reliability engineering, asset management and maintenance performance improvement.
- Experience conducting and facilitating Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations.
- Experience managing engineering changes, technical documentation and maintenance assurance activities within a controlled engineering environment.
- Strong analytical and reporting capabilities with the ability to interpret complex technical data.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel, CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems) and asset management systems.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of UK rail industry standards and rolling stock maintenance requirements.
- Experience working with OEMs, suppliers and regulatory stakeholders.
- Understanding of fleet performance monitoring and reliability-centred maintenance principles.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and asset management best practice.
