Software Engineer – Java
Portsmouth – Hybrid, minimum 3 days per week onsite 12-month contract with potential extension £55 per hour, umbrella Active SC clearance required We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join a collaborative Agile team developing Network Management, Payload Management and Terminal Management software for a new satellite programme.
Working as part of a seven-person Scrum team within a wider programme, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from design and development through to testing and delivery.
The role requires strong Java development experience alongside an understanding of microservice architectures, distributed systems and software design.
Responsibilities
Develop high-quality Java software within an Agile Scrum environment.
Contribute to the design, implementation and testing of features for a new product development.
Work across all stages of the software development lifecycle.
Produce software designs using UML and Sys ML.
Develop and integrate microservices and RESTful web services.
Write unit tests and contribute to automated testing.
Participate in sprint planning and provide task estimates.
Work collaboratively with the wider development team and internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to CI/CD delivery practices and ongoing improvements to the development process.
Essential Skills and Experience
Strong commercial experience with Java 8 or later.
Spring Boot and the Spring Framework.
Experience developing with Hibernate.
RESTful APIs and web services over HTTPS.
Microservice architectures.
Distributed systems.
Software design patterns.
UML and/or Sys ML, ideally using Enterprise Architect or a similar tool.
Unit testing and automated testing.
Agile development processes, ideally Scrum.
CI/CD delivery techniques.
Git or similar source code management tools.
Jira or similar issue-tracking systems.
Ability to work effectively and independently within a collaborative team environment.
