An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Estimator to join a major UK civil engineering and infrastructure contractor. The role will involve leading the pricing of complex infrastructure tenders across a range of sectors, working closely with bid, planning, commercial and technical teams. This position would suit a senior-level estimator who is comfortable taking ownership of bid pricing from early engagement through to final submission and handover.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for competitive tenders and budget pricing.
- Provide commercial and pricing input during Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) stages.
- Work closely with the Bid Manager to ensure competitive, compliant and well-structured pricing.
- Agree construction methodologies and outputs in coordination with planning and technical teams.
- Advise on the most cost-effective design solutions and price alternative proposals where required.
- Ensure all governance, estimating procedures and approval processes are followed.
- Labour
- Develop project-specific labour rates for self-delivered works.
- Ensure compliance with Working Rule Agreements and project-specific wage requirements.
- Prepare scheme-specific labour rate calculations where required.
- Plant
- Develop local plant rates for self-delivered items.
- Coordinate with the Planner to reconcile plant resource levels.
- Materials
- Prepare detailed material comparison sheets considering unit rates, wastage and logistics.
- Liaise with procurement on supplier selection and compliance.
- Review and agree supplier quotations for inclusion in the estimate.
- Subcontractors
- Support procurement in identifying and selecting appropriate subcontractors.
- Assess compliance and commercial suitability of subcontractor quotations.
- Prepare subcontractor comparison sheets and agree final selections.
- Temporary Works
- Coordinate with Temporary Works and Technical teams to define scope and requirements.
- Agree temporary works costs and allowances.
- Staff & Preliminaries
- Agree staffing levels and site management structures with bid and operations teams.
- Price staff costs using current rates, including shift patterns and overtime where required.
- Work with planners to determine preliminaries duration and resource requirements.
- Ensure all client requirements and project-specific obligations are fully allowed for.
- Contribute to tender risk and opportunity registers.
- Prepare tender summaries and pricing build-ups for internal reviews and settlement meetings.
- Support bid settlement processes and prepare adjustment schedules.
- Produce final pricing documentation for tender submission, ensuring positive cash flow where possible.
- Assist with post-tender clarifications and negotiations.
- Prepare detailed pricing handover documentation for delivery teams.
- Attend handover meetings for successful bids.
- Participate in post-tender reviews and feedback sessions for unsuccessful submissions.
- Strong background in civil engineering and infrastructure estimating.
- Detailed knowledge of construction methodologies and procurement routes.
- Good commercial awareness of standard forms of contract.
- Experience working within structured bid and work-winning environments.
- Proficiency in industry-standard estimating software.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
