Job Purpose

We are seeking a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with proven experience in the design and delivery of pumped drainage systems for major infrastructure projects. The role will focus on highways and tunnel environments, supporting the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) programme and associated assets. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, design assurance, and stakeholder coordination across pumped drainage, tunnel drainage, and internal drainage systems, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, safety requirements, and programme objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the design of pumped drainage systems for tunnels, highways, and major infrastructure assets
  • Deliver mechanical design solutions for tunnel drainage, sump and pump arrangements, rising mains, valve chambers, and internal drainage networks
  • Review and assure designs produced by consultants and contractors
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (DMRB, CDM Regulations, British Standards, and client specifications)
  • Support integration of drainage systems within wider tunnel and highway M&E systems
  • Provide technical input to risk, constructability, and value engineering reviews
  • Interface with civil, electrical, systems, and construction teams
  • Support design reviews, assurance gateways, and stakeholder meetings
  • Contribute to programme delivery on a complex, safety-critical infrastructure project

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng - IMechE or equivalent)
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with demonstrable experience in pumped drainage system design
  • Proven experience delivering drainage solutions for tunnels, highways, or major infrastructure projects
  • Experience with tunnel internal drainage, pumped systems, and confined infrastructure environments
  • Knowledge of drainage design within road tunnels and highway assets
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and safety-critical design environments
  • Ability to work within large, multidisciplinary project teams

Desirable Experience

  • Previous involvement on Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) or comparable major UK infrastructure schemes
  • Experience working for or alongside National Highways
  • Familiarity with asset management and operational drainage considerations in tunnel environments

Working Environment

This role is hybrid, requiring 2-3 days per week in the office to support collaboration with the project team, with flexibility for remote working on other days.
