We are looking for a forward-thinking and proactive Assistant Accountant to act as Number Two to the Finance Manager, supporting both operational delivery and the ongoing development of the Finance function. This role sits at the heart of Finance and has broad exposure across the UK and Ireland operations. You will work closely with the Finance Manager and oversee the outputs of a transactional finance team responsible for invoicing and day-to-day processing across the business. The role combines hands-on month end responsibility with a strong focus on process improvement, systems and controls. It is well suited to someone who enjoys ownership, thrives in a fast-moving environment and is motivated by making processes work better, faster and smarter.
Key Responsibilities for the Role:
- Financial Reporting & Month End
- Take a lead role in month end close activities
- Prepare and post prepayments, accruals and journals
- Support balance sheet ownership and reconciliations
- Assist with management accounts preparation and reporting packs
- Ensure timely, accurate and well-controlled period end processes
- Team & Operational Support
- Work closely with the transactional finance team covering UK and Ireland operations
- Provide guidance, structure and oversight across invoicing and transactional workflows
- Act as a point of escalation for complex queries or issues
- Process Improvement & Systems
- Drive continuous improvement across Finance processes
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy and control
- Contribute to initiatives such as accounts payable outsourcing, AI-enabled workflows or automation
- Support system enhancements and better use of existing finance tools
- Champion smarter ways of working through technology and data
- Commercial & Ad Hoc Support
- Support budgeting, forecasting and KPI reporting
- Provide ad hoc analysis to support decision making
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the business.
What we are looking for:
- Part-qualified (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or qualified by experience
- Solid experience supporting month end close, including prepayments and accruals
- Confidence acting as deputy or second-in-command to a Finance Manager
- Self-starter with a track record of ownership and follow-through
- Strong Excel skills and tech-savvy, comfortable with finance systems
- Systems and process minded, with a genuine interest in improving how Finance operates
- Clear communicator, able to work with Finance and non-Finance stakeholders
- Curious, with integrity and a continuous improvement mindset
