The Lifting Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all lifting operations are meticulously designed, planned, and executed in accordance with company procedures, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. This role involves preparing detailed lift plans, verifying equipment suitability, conducting comprehensive risk assessments, and providing expert technical support for both routine and complex lifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review lifting plans, procedures, rigging studies, method statements, and risk assessments.
  • Calculate load weights, centres of gravity, sling tensions, crane capacities, and lifting arrangements.
  • Assess and approve the selection of lifting equipment, including cranes, slings, shackles, spreader beams, and lifting frames.
  • Review and approve rigging configurations and lifting arrangements for heavy structures.
  • Ensure all lifting operations comply with relevant legislation, industry standards, and company policies.
  • Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and lifting operation reviews to promote safety and compliance.
  • Conduct site surveys and offshore inspections prior to lifting activities.
  • Provide technical support to crane operators, riggers, and lifting supervisors throughout operations.
  • Verify certification and inspection status of lifting equipment to maintain operational integrity.
  • Monitor offshore lifting activities and offer technical assistance during critical lifts.
  • Investigate lifting incidents, identify lessons learned, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate effectively with project managers, marine engineers, installation contractors, crane operators, and vessel teams to ensure safe and successful lifting operations.
  • Review vendor documentation and assess equipment suitability for project-specific requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to lifting operations.

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in heavy lift engineering and rigging design.
  • Experience with offshore crane and vessel operations.
  • Proficiency in lift point design and verification.
  • Knowledge of offshore installation and removal methodologies.
  • Strong capability in risk assessment and lifting safety management.
  • Familiarity with offshore lifting standards, including: LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations), PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations), Relevant EN standards for lifting equipment, ISO lifting and rigging standards, BS 7121, API standards, DNV standards, IMCA lifting guidelines.
  • Desirable experience in topside removal campaigns, heavy module lifts, heavy-lift vessel and crane operations.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Structural, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of UK offshore legislation and lifting standards.
  • Relevant lifting and rigging certifications applicable in the UK, such as LOLER, LEEA, and OPITO.
  • Extensive experience in offshore oil and gas decommissioning projects.
  • Understanding of both international and local lifting standards and offshore regulations.
  • Offshore survival and medical certifications, for example, BOSIET/FOET and OGUK Medical, as required.
