Do you have the systems safety experience to support some of the UK's most advanced naval and defence technologies? We are looking for a Safety Engineer to join the Safety & Environmental Protection team at TKMS ATLAS UK, based at Winfrith, Dorset. This role has been created to support the delivery of safety activities across a range of existing and future programmes with the UK Ministry of Defence and major UK prime contractors.

As a Safety Engineer, you will support the application of safety and environmental protection principles across the product lifecycle. You will contribute to the delivery of robust, safe, and compliant defence systems, ensuring safety considerations are embedded throughout design, development, and in-service support. You will work closely with engineering, systems, ILS, and project teams to assess and manage safety risks, supporting the production of safety artefacts and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting the delivery of product safety and environmental protection activities
  • Producing and maintaining safety artefacts including hazard logs and safety case reports
  • Supporting hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation activities
  • Assisting with the implementation and maintenance of safety engineering processes and policies
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable defence standards, legislation, and best practice
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of the Safety & Environmental Management System (SEMS)
  • Working with system experts to identify and manage safety and environmental risks
  • Contributing to bids by supporting safety‑related estimates and inputs
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safety is considered throughout the product lifecycle
Qualifications
  • A degree in an engineering‑related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in a safety‑critical or regulated engineering environment (defence, maritime, aerospace, nuclear, rail, etc.)
  • Understanding of systems safety engineering principles across the product lifecycle
  • Experience supporting safety case development, hazard analysis, or risk assessment activities
  • Awareness of relevant standards (e.g. Def Stan, ASEMS, POSMS)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with technical stakeholders
  • A proactive and analytical approach with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Desirable
  • Experience within defence or maritime environments
  • Professional membership (IEng/CEng or working towards)
  • Functional Safety certification (e.g. TÜV)
